At last--a new Hill House Newsletter!
Welcome to the first issue of the Hill House Newsletter – or, if you are a member of the Neil Gaiman Preferred Editions Series, welcome to the sixth issue of what was the Gaiman Newsletter but has now been expanded to cover our growing list of authors – Ray Bradbury, Neal Stephenson, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Terry Pratchett – as well as all other exciting developments at Hill House.
This premiere issue has taken a longer to appear than we originally planned. The reason for this is that we've been working with the marketing team at HarperCollins/William Morrow publishers to hammer out a number of exciting cross-promotion plans for our respective editions of Neil Gaiman's new novel, ANANSI BOYS. The details of these plans"”and all the information you'll need to place your order for this book"”can be found in our special section below. ******* Ray Bradbury and THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES: The Definitive Edition
A few weeks ago we spent some time out in Los Angeles with Ray Bradbury and Sam Weller, author of the new biography of Ray, THE BRADBURY CHRONICLES: The Life of Ray Bradbury (William Morrow). During that time we finalized the contents for the upcoming Hill House publication of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES: The Definitive Edition. Once you see the incredible array of additional material that we'll be including in this book, you'll realize just why we are calling it "The Definitive Edition." You'll learn all the details of this publication in the next issue of the Newsletter.
SPECIAL LIMITED OFFER ON THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: If you haven't heard about Hill House's latest publication, THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5, by Ray Bradbury, then you owe it to yourself to check out the link at the end of this section. "The Hill House edition of THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5 is truly a state-of-the-art production," states one of the many reviews we've received. Not only is the production truly beautiful, the volume contains an additional FIVE never-seen-before stories by Mr. Bradbury--none of which appeared in the trade edition of this book. Our retail price for this volume is $200--but if you order and pay for your copy by June 13th, you'll only pay $175--and that includes domestic shipping! To order at this special price, send an email to: sales@hillhousepublishers.com and make sure to put "CATS Special Offer" in the subject line of your email. ***** Lois McMaster Bujold"”A Triple-Threat Award Winner Joins Hill House
Many of you have seen our latest catalog (in .pdf format on the home page of the Hill House website), and we've received a number of emails about our upcoming editions of Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion Saga, starting with THE HALLOWED HUNT coming in July. (The photo at right is a shot of the prototype book and case for THE HALLOWED HUNT--and yes, that's a traycase instead of a slipcase! Even our numbered editions will have a traycase.) We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Lois to Hill House"”and offer our congratulations on her recent Nebula Award for Best Novel for THE PALADIN OF SOULS, the second volume in the Chalion Saga. PALADIN OF SOULS also won the Hugo Award for Best Novel at the WorldCon last August, and the Locus Award as well. More Lois and her fantasy series in the next issue of the Newsletter. ***** Neil Gaiman's NEVERWHERE
We're happy to announce that the manuscript of The Author's Preferred Edition of NEVERWHERE is now in Neil Gaiman's hands for a final read-through. Compiling this edition has been a rigorous and complicated undertaking. We began this project with a total of eight separate manuscripts that Neil had produced over the years"”beginning with his very first version from many years ago and ending with the latest changes and revisions he made for the recent trade paperback edition. As most Gaiman readers know, the original British publication of NEVERWHERE is quite a bit different from the Avon hardcover version that appeared in the U.S. a year or so later. The Hill House edition of NEVERWHERE will incorporate all the elements from both these editions"”as well as some other changes supplied by Neil. Weaving these versions into one ultimate edition has been a painstaking effort, especially for Hill House co-publisher Pete Atkins, who has spent countless hours working on the variants. We're confident, however, that you'll find all this work to have been worth the wait.
In a previous newsletter we announced the Upgrade Edition of NEVERWHERE"”this two-volume set will include not only the Author's Preferred Edition but also Neil's original scripts for the BBC teleplay that inaugurated the entire project. Again, we have four or five different iterations of each script, so we're now in the middle of compiling the very best"”and most significant"”versions of each episode for the Upgraded Edition. As an added bonus, we have an amazing array of supplementary material supplied to us by Neil, including some fascinating behind-the-scenes material and correspondence that will offer a truly comprehensive overview of the history of NEVERWHERE.
For example, we'll be including material from when the project had its original title: THE UNDERSIDE. . .Neil's production notes on viewing the video of the first two episodes of the series. . .his ideas for a follow-up series to NEVERWHERE. . .and much more. None of this material has ever been published before, so you'll have the chance to see it all for the very first time.
Within a few hours of our announcement of the Upgraded Edition, we started receiving emails from hundreds of our Gaiman Series customers, all wanting to order the Upgrade. In light of this, we are making sure that any Gaiman Series Member who wants the Upgrade will receive it. In other words, you don't have to worry about not getting your order in"”if you're a Gaiman Series Member, you'll have an Upgrade reserved for you, if you want it. Given that the page count of the Upgrade Edition is not yet finalized (as new material keeps turning up), we won't be asking for your order (or payment) until we are absolutely clear on the production costs and, therefore, the final price. We will certainly let you all know as soon as this information is decided"”and we'll be happy to take your orders at that point. Of course, Members of the Series have already paid for their Author's Preferred NEVERWHERE, so the only additional cost will be for the Upgraded Edition.
It's taken us far longer than we originally projected to bring all this material into what will be the definitive edition"”but we want to make sure that our customers, especially the Members of the Neil Gaiman Series, receive a two-volume set that provides as much new material as we can fit. In the meantime, we have some exciting news for all Neil Gaiman readers. . .
ANANSI BOYS: The Limited Edition
Any Gaiman reader who's been following Neil's blog knows that his new novel, ANANSI BOYS, will be published by William Morrow this September. We're excited to announce that we've just concluded negotiations with Morrow to bring you the Hill House Deluxe Limited edition of ANANSI BOYS: The Author's Preferred Edition.
When we made our offer for the limited edition rights to ANANSI BOYS, the highest echelons at HarperCollins/Morrow asked us if we would be interested in working with them on a cooperative cross-promotion effort for both our editions. It took us a few weeks to work out all the details, but we're now ready to announce the results.
We are now taking orders for the Deluxe Limited edition of ANANSI BOYS by Neil Gaiman. Our edition will be available for shipping on January 1st of next year. (And when we say "available," we mean it"”we will have photos of the finished book to show you at least a month or so before we actually ship.) William Morrow will be promoting the Hill House edition in their advertising and publicity efforts, including their amazing AuthorTracker internet program. This means that approximately fifteen thousand people who subscribe to the Neil Gaiman AuthorTracker will see everything we're planning for the Hill House edition. With only 1,000 copies of the limited edition of ANANSI BOYS available, they're sure to go incredibly quickly. And that's one reason why we're letting you"”our loyal Hill House customers"”know about this before anyone else.
The Hill House edition of ANANSI BOYS: The Author's Preferred Edition will be just as deluxe a production as our edition of AMERICAN GODS. It will be bound in a deep blue Japanese silk and will feature a die-cut slipcase with a ribbon pull. Inlaid into the front of the book (and revealed through the die-cut) will be a beautiful illustration of a spider"”a very special spider, as you'll understand once you read the book. The volume will of course be signed by Neil and it will be limited to 1,000 numbered and 52 lettered copies.
And what would a Neil Gaiman Author's Preferred edition be without extra material? The Hill House edition of ANANSI BOYS will feature additional text that won't appear in the Morrow trade edition.
The retail price of ANANSI BOYS is set at $200. The shipping charge for domestic U.S. orders is $8. Of course, the Gaiman Series Members will receive their personal limitation number for their copy.
William Morrow is producing a special sixteen-page excerpt booklet featuring the first chapter of ANANSI BOYS. As part of our cross-promotional partnership with Morrow, we have arranged to have a number of copies of the booklet specially reserved for purchasers of our edition of ANANSI BOYS. In addition, we've designed a special envelope (see photo) that will contain your booklet"”and each of the booklets will be numbered to correspond to your edition of ANANSI BOYS.
In addition, each envelope/booklet will also feature a separate 4" x 7" beautiful color reproduction of a new painting by Dagmara Matuszak. This color print"”which will be numbered as well"”will be available ONLY with the booklet/envelope combination.
So how do you get one of these booklets and color prints? It's simple"”just place your prepaid order for the Hill House edition of ANANSI BOYS no later than June 13th, 2005. You'll receive your deluxe numbered booklet within two or three weeks from when you place your order"”and there's no charge for shipping. But remember, you must place your order by Monday, June 13th or you'll miss out on this special offer. The quantities of the booklet and painting are extremely limited, so we have to handle orders on a first-come, first-served basis.
AND THERE'S MORE. . . Once we at Hill House have received all the prepaid orders that qualify for the free excerpt booklet, we will conduct a drawing. We will pull three names at random from the qualified orders"”and those three lucky individuals will receive, in addition to their numbered booklet, a free bound galley of Morrow's edition of ANANSI BOYS as soon as they're available. Note that Morrow is producing a very limited number of the bound proofs for this title"”in fact, the quantities are so limited that Morrow is actually numbering each and every proof, making this a truly exclusive offer.
FOR NEIL GAIMAN SERIES MEMBERS ONLY"”As a Member of the Neil Gaiman Series, you've been incredibly patient in your long wait for NEVERWHERE. We'd like to thank you for your support by making this additional offer:
Any Gaiman Series Member who orders ANANSI BOYS will automatically receive a $15 discount off the retail price"”your Member-only price for the limited will be $185 instead of the retail price of $200. This offer is made solely to the Members of the Gaiman Series. As a Member, this special price is guaranteed for you"”but remember to order by June 13th if you want your free booklet and a chance at the exclusive bound galley.

Time is Running Out--to get your Numbered ANANSI BOYS Excerpt Booklet!
In our last newsletter we told you about our upcoming publication of Neil Gaiman's ANANSI BOYS: The Author's Preferred Edition--and also your chance to receive the ANANSI BOYS excerpt booklet, numbered and with an envelope featuring a new painting by MELINDA artist Dagmara Matuszak.
Your response to this offer has been nothing short of overwhelming--responding to the flood of emails and letters has taken all our time during the last week.
We've also added a large number of new subscribers in the last couple of weeks--people who didn't receive the first email. Many of these new subscribers are a result of people forwarding the newsletter to their friends--so if you know of anyone who might like to keep up-to-date on Hill House, please go ahead and click the "Tell-a-friend" link.
As a result, we've decided to extend our deadline for qualifying for the excerpt booklet from Monday, June 13th to Monday, June 20th.
But--as our supply of these special excerpt booklets is running quite low-- this special one-time extension is the only one we'll be able to offer. So make sure to get your order in as soon as possible.
We'll be shipping out the excerpt booklets within the next two weeks, so for those of you who have already placed your orders, keep an eye out for it.

I am so tempted to get this - then again, I'm not sure whether it'd be worth the price for me. I wasn't too keen on American Gods. Then again... Any help in deciding, Grand Moff?

yeah - go read the Anansi Boys excerpt to see if you'll be keener for it! I answered a bunch of questions about Hill House down in GOW the other day when JP was asking, as did Silly Punk, so you may want to look there to get a feel for the company

It was a no brainer for me to order the Hill House Edition but I must say that I am sorely disappointed that they are not producing a Reader's copy of the book.
The added advantage of the Reader's copy was one of the selling points of the Hill House series to me originally and I had hoped that they would continue producing them. I personally wouldn't mind paying for it if they would just print it. I can just hope that someone over at HH will think about this and see if the other serires members would be will to pay for the RC.
C'mon, GMZoe, you've got to be freakin' kidding me! I am so damn tempted... I have the money (well, $500 of the $600 is free and clear, the rest would have to come from the family budget) ... and this just simply sounds so awesome. And it's what I'm getting more into anyway (rather than my comics and such) ... hmm, damn ... maybe I should just send a querry and see if they have any left .. then again, I'm sure they do ... DAMN YOU, GMZOE!!!!!! Quit spending other people's money, will you!?

This was in the last update ... I'm assuming that they just forgot to change the date in the further down body of the message? Damn, still thinking, but it's a lot of mulah.

I've decided I can't do it. Just can't pull the trigger. It's totally amazing and all, but it's just too much money to lay down right now. I can't help thinking I'll find something else (or rather, several something elses) to spend my $500 on as soon as I plunk down the cash. So, I'll keep looking for little gems like the Melinda book and save the big stuff for some other time (when maybe I can better afford it).
Thanks for the info though, GMZoe! Keep it coming any time you run across stuff like this.

so, instead of going for one of them, you've decided to do without any of them? um, ok... I'm the most curious about the Neverwhere edition since there are so many editions floating about I'd love to see a definitive one. I'm doubly curious about how Anansi Boys can be (Essentially) instantly released with additional text. that's just odd
Posts: 13083 | Location: Tucson | Registered: June 19, 2001
Oh, I don't know that I won't buy any of them, just that I can't pull the trigger on becoming a member AND purchasing Anasi Boys all in one fell swoop to get in on all the extra goodies... unless I win the lotto on Wednesday or something.

I was wondering about this, too. However... Mr. Gaiman did post on his journal a couple of weeks ago: (I actually found the original outline for ANANSI BOYS yesterday, the one I wrote in 1998 and never looked at again, while looking for cool things for the Hill House edition, and it was so odd to see the moments of occasional, almost coincidental congruence with the novel I wrote in 2004).
So, apparently he is finding some stuff. Still, it would be kinda ackward to have actual text cut for length reasons put into a special edition coming out right after the regular one; it would make the Morrow edition seem like an abridged version. Oh well... I was planning on ordering the Hill House edition anyways.
hrm. I guess I had taken "additional text" to mean integrated text, but I suppose that it could mean dvd-like extras as well. I'm sure there are plenty of those that could be thrown in

no fun edition for me. but i'll buy the hardcopy...to get him to sign most likely...
