I quote " The Dolphin Hotel had a concierge. He was young and bespectacled, and he was reading a paperback novel with a rose and a gun on the cover." Ok now, if this was a Dark Tower reference I want to know, becuase it made my head turn all fuzzy and inside out.
"In the beginning, there was stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Really you wouldn't beleive the incredibly huge amount of stuff there was just lying about. In the middle the stuff moved around quite a bit, and by the end the stuff just wasn't as cool as it once was." Iachos |

Is there a specific book that has that on the front cover? I'm not familiar with the series and sort of assumed that Neil was talking about the sort of book that has that on the front cover. Secret Agent Man books about gentlemen spies and the like.

The last Dark Tower book has it on the cover -- Roland (the hero) holding a gun and a rose.

Sounds quite likely, then. Neil's certainly no stranger to making such references in his more serious books.

In addition to "The Dark Tower", there's a reference during the Higgler funeral to the ankle grabbing scene from the film of Stephen King's "Carrie."
I suspect that Neil Gaiman saw the film at a drive-in theatre himself, which is why he described Mr. Nancy as having seen it in that venue. I can't think of any other reason why he would mention that. It was the last film I ever saw at a drive-in, myself. |
