I just finished the book, enjoyed it very much but got a bit confused. *spoiler* it was the part about the mermaid, is there some significance that i missed to that, is that someone charlie has already met, or am i looking to far into it. pretty much all i want to know is, did i miss something somewhere in the book that would have answered this.

Hi Rudy J Beefy -- I'm at work right now so don't have the book in hand and am relying on my faulty memory . . . what I recall is that in the first chapter where Fat Charlie is telling Rosie about how awful his dad was, one of the things was that he would go walking on the beach with his dad and his dad would always ask him if he (Fat Charlie) had seen the mermaids and then say something to the effect of "Oh, you just missed 'em!", kind of teasing FC. And FC was using it as an example of how his dad was always making a fool of him. But then in the end, there are the mermaids and FC does see them and his son does too. It's a sort of sweet epilogue kind of thing: there were things that Mr. Nancy wasn't lying about and there are good legacies amongst the bad memories, and that's what Charlie's going to be able to embrace and pass on to his own son.

Hope this helps, and later I'll try to look up more specific quotes! Smile
