Picture of The Scoundrel
Posted
From Neil's Journal (I'm guessing it's alright to put the shortcut up here, too). Click Here. Did you guys see it? Even though it was a bunch of white polish people, I still thought it was a lot of fun to watch. The spider in the bathtub, the bird lady, Mr. Nancy's karoke skills, even the ghost. Big Grin

I wish we had book trailers like this in America. Why are the only ones we get are scuzzy James Patterson novels? Confused

WOW!!!

That's brilliant. I'd love to see a subtitled version of this ad. Smile

You're right - it seems awfully stange with white people and the wrong accent! But then it gets to Bird - WOW!

Two things:

1. While watching this trailer you are strongly advised to remember that this particular ad's author, Stanisław Mąderek, loves to play with original art and mock. In other words, this is a serious ad done in a very tongue-in-cheek style.

2. Another famous piece by Stanisław Mąderek is Stars In Black (basically, Star Wars and Matrix all-in-one). All errors are intentional (especially in subtitles and dialogues). You can download it from http://stars-in-black.pl/linki.htm or simply search Google).

3. The dialogues, translated:
----
Sound: woman shrieking
Sound: footsteps, heavy breathing

(a man enters a bathroom)

Narrator's voice: Fat Charlie was not fat, at all,
(spider in a bathtub)
but he was called that during early childhood,
(old man on stage)
by his father, Anansi, whose (father's) sudden death turned Charlie's world upside down cut.
(closeup of decolletage)

(old woman bows toward screen)
Old woman: Your father was a god.

(door opens)
Smiling man: I am your brother.

(towel clad woman exits bathroom)
Towel clad woman: Oh, hi. I'm Daisy.
Sitting woman: Is that so?

(a man turns away from the monitor)
Man in front of monitor: Abso-fucking-lutely.

(old woman gets some items from behind the table)
Narrator's voice: Fat Charlie enters the world of magic and ancient beliefs.
Third old woman: They only had these.
(closeup of three Madagascar penguin candles)

(CGI ghost in office)
Woman's voice: You made me believe in ghosts.

(black clad woman against backdrop of clouds)
Black clad woman: That's good.

(a man lights a cigarette lighter)
Lighter man: I'm going to take you to a safe place.

(closeup of THE book)
Narrator's voice: Anansi Boys, latest masterpiece by Neil Gaiman, author of bestselling American Gods.

Man's voice: Spider, I'd feel safe in a luxurious hotel apartament, too.

On screen: ANANSI BOYS
a novel by Neil Gaiman
available from 24th of February in EMPIK outlets, from 3rd of March in bookstores

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!
