i think he is going to manila, he's mentioned it a few times in his blog.
and he's probably going because a lot of fans convinced their fave bookstore to invite him and his publisher said "yes, do go and make yourself/books more popular please".... which books were you deciding between...and which one did you eventually get? lookit me, i'm postin! wheee! |

Uhm...the way you posted this topic and its title seemed as if the idea of Neil coming here for fans like us is such a terrible, terrible thing ^^; I guess his publisher eventually took notice of his growing number of fans in here...finally decided it might be feasible for some marketing... ^^; His sponsor had a rather ingenious way of making money out of the whole thing though. It's so shrewd...well I don't know if it's really the practice wherever Neil goes for signings, but the bookstore chain requires us to buy any of his works from now up to his visit to actually be eligible for lining up for his autograph. You have to buy something in order to get to line up. But what if you already had the books you wanted to have signed long ago? What if you really liked only a select few works and have them autogrpahed? It's like practically buying your position in line ^^;; Oh well sure there's raffles and an art contest too...but God, the prizes...well that's just one other complaint of mine - offer us some prizes worth killing for...for example works the sponsoring bookstore couldn't acquire, perhaps? Rarer items please! ^^;; Angels and Visitations or Signal to Noise or The Sandman Tarot or ...geez... BTW, nice purchase - Smoke and Mirrors ^^ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Just wait 'til tomorrow I guess that's what they all say Just before they fall apart." - Regret, New Order |

that's kinda harsh... you're already getting them in the store, willing to look at least at neil's new book. i'd get resentful at having to buy something to get in line. lookit me, i'm postin! wheee! |

That's not always the way signings are managed, but this isn't an isolated case. There is some point to their position: Neil's signings are a logistical nightmare for organizers, in timing and crowd control. (Trust me, I've managed a few, the man is a sweetheart but a compleat traffic hazard.) When the signing is being hosted at a convention or event, the host has no particular stake in the same way that a bookstore -- often crowded with shelves and other customers -- does about issues such as staff overtime, other customers being able to get to the shelves, and such. It's not unreasonable for them to require that you actually spend the price of one book in their store (on stock that they might not have bought if Neil weren't coming in to sign) so they can use the profit to support operations and future signings. It's smart, actually, that they don't require you make the purchase on that exact day. You can stop in earlier, whenever's convenient, and just keep the receipt, so they'll have a shorter payment line while the signing is going on. |

Neil's commented on his journal on this. It is pretty mercenary but it will cost them a lot to fly him over. They've at least changed the rules so that anyone can get one item signed but if you want more than one item, you'll have to buy something.
In the end, I don't know if it's a good strategy for them, since although they'll earn money for now, it won't generate them any goodwill with Neil's fans in the Philippines. see, what if instead of constraining people who want to get things signed with "buy something or leave type" rules, they offer 10% off coupons to people who go to the reading/signing? i bet that would boost the numbers of purchasers vs. spectators. plus you increase customer loyalty, and it's good PR.

good thing the bookstore was selling Dust Covers ^^ - signing pass, come to papa! ^^
Almost didn't qualify for a pass because it was primarily by Dave McKean, but in the end the saleslady relented mwahahaha ^^ and besides collaborations with Neil must count dammit...
