It was a wonderful evening and a brilliant film. I will definitely go and see it again. My 11 year old was hanging on to my arm in terror at one point but enjoying every minute of it! But I won’t talk too much about it for fear of spoilers for UK cinema goers! There are a few below – but not many, if anyone is interested.

The talk afterwards was great – Mr Henry, Mr Neil and a fat man from the NFT (I’m sorry, I didn’t catch his name) took to the stage. Lots of chat regarding book to film questions, making the models, how long they took to get around to making the film - about 9 years I think they said, from Mr Neil sending the book to Mr Henry to Mr Neil saying the film script was too like the book and would Mr Henry please make the film his own, rather than a direct copy. They talked a little about 3D and using it for the depth of the film, rather than for the gimmick of things that pop out at you, and how everyone at the IMAX was waiting for 3D porn. Well. Not everyone, obviously!

Coraline's Father/Other Father, John Hodgson, who was in the audience (and has apparently spent a lifetime squeezing himself into Mr Neil’s life) was invited onto the stage, and Ian McShane, who spoke for Mr Bobinsky, would have been invited had he not left with his small kiddlet when the film ended. Probably way past bedtime! There was much politeness over who should sit where. And Mr Neil was his amusing self - he never fails to raise a smile and a giggle, with warmth and good humour.

They discussed why the story of the bees was left out of the film. A big fan of Mr Henry (who was very sweet and extremely nervous) gave him something he had made. I’m not sure quite what it was, a wire/cane cage containing something? I do not know. We were right at the back and could not see! My kids wanted to ask why the cellar scene from the book, which was their scariest memory of it, was omitted from the film but were too shy to ask (so I found out later for them!)

And the code for the Nike Dunk competition was still at the end of the film. Which is really disappointing, knowing you cannot enter, because the promotions were left in the US.

Mr Neil was waiting for us when we came out of the toilet after the show (I wish!) So I asked him about the Coraline Keys – and again, the publicity was just for the US – “ask Universal” he said. So I will. (He is shorter than I thought he was – he’s always been sitting down/signing when I met him before!) But so lovely, and polite, and kind.

There. Sorry if I’ve bored anyone. I tend to get carried away (and forget what I want to say) but thank you for listening.

I did mean to add that the NFT were filming the chat with Mr Neil and Henry Selick to put in their archives. You may be able to get access to it at some point if interested.
