I`m reminded of the hostess bars and love hotels I discovered when I was in Japan about ten years ago. Far cleaner than the slighly dingy rooms and the stepping over of used syringes that you`d find in real life whorehouses. It`s basically the illegality that forces the girls to work in those conditions though. If we weren`t so hung up on outdated nostrums of sexual inhibition and allowed those with a talent in this area to trade their skills like any other professionals then we`d all be a lot more well balanced. The problem I see here is not inhibitions but customers looking for the CHEAPEST possible thrills.

Resulting in...whats the effing word again...human traffic? from our newest member states in the European Union. These girls are in our country illegally and have no one to turn to. It's horrible.

But they're cheap.
And customers who are cheap come and visit them.

Regrettably prostitution, like taking drugs is not legal in the United Kingdom and the reason for the squalid conditions most have to operate under is due to the risk of prosecution by the authorities. Likewise, prohibition (In this case related to the freedom to seek work) lies at the root of the problem with human trafficking because people have to rack up huge debts to the smugglers in order to come and live in Europe.

My contention is that much of that trade could be stamped out if work permits were made available for sex workers or better still that all immigration restrictions apart from security/background checks were eliminated. Sadly, the way in which democracy works means that the prejudices of the majority prevent such a sensible enlightened attitude from prevailing. Net result an intrusive state apparatus and much human misery for those caught in it`s net.

We have work permits for prostitutes. They're linked to free annual medical checkups too.

I think the legal prostitutes even pay into the social security system too, but not sure.

Hasn't helped against drugs and human trafficking from the east, though, and those two are notoriously interlinked.

As long as the government attempts to artificially constrain the supply of both drugs and people you create a market for smugglers. Allow people to move freely or at least more cheaply than they can by paying the smugglers then you undercut their business model. Likewise with the consumption of illegal drugs. If you could buy cannabis or cocaine in your local supermarket, the scale of those companies` operations would put the street dealers out of business and create an addition stream of tax revenue for medical treatment (As applies to alcohol and cigarettes for instance).
