old thread!!!!

have you seen the age of the *nothing to do with gaiman* or *bump this thread*??

as long as you have something to add, it's fine.

there's probably one or two that should lie dead, but they should be obvious.

I pick "My Humps" or whatever that song is called. Arrogant and daft at the same time and sung in the most insipid monotone.

I have a tiny problem with this line from 'Do The Strand'

quote:
rhododendron is a nice flower
evergreen it lasts forever but it can't beat the strand power
do the strand

how can you compare a flower to a dance? it's just not right.

David Bowie - 'Song For Bob Dylan'

Dude, Dylan isn't going to save the world. He got over that trip ages ago. So shut up and go back to singing good songs and let him go back to singing good songs and leave the world saving to Bono...

Just saw that video on You TUbe... The video itsel fis funny, the cover not os much. Is the slow tempo mad eon purpose to underline the sheer stupidity of the song? Coz if not, it sucks.

You're really lovely
Underneath it all
D'You want to love me
Underneath it all
I'm really lucky
Underneath it all
You're really lovely

You know some real bad tricks
And you need some discipline
But, lately you've been tryin' real hard
And givin' me your best
And, you give me the most gorgeous sleep
That I've ever had
And when it's really bad
I guess it's not that bad
from No Doubt. I actually don't mind the song, but I hate the lyrics...if the best ou can say is "when it's really bad, I guess it's not that bad" when talking about your relationship, there are some problems you need to deal with.

Well, Blake sang this on AMERICAN IDOL as "an inspirational song" ... and I've always hated this song (mostly because it's pap , but isn't allowed to remain pap since others over-praise it to the level of annoyance)

And I wondered "What's he thinking? Is he so befuddled by the shallow thoughts of modern pop culture that he hasn't even thought that he MAY be alienating voters?"

quote:
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try

Okay, I don't care what Lennon thought about the real existence or not of "Heaven" here, okay. But Heaven is an ideal, it's an aspiration, a dream. It's like writing a song "Imagine there are no Dreams, no Justice, no better future to hope for"

No hell below us
Above us only sky

Again: why not allow people to hope, to aspire? "Above us only sky" ... oh, and then you suffocate and die because the air's so thin?

It's like the Cosmonauts hanging the sign in the church "We have been to Heaven and there is no God" ... fine ... and the People Socialist Paradise cannot manufacture enough toilet paper for you to use, this week!

It just seems people take this as a GOOD thing ... when it's a materialistic mundane drag.

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Uh huh. I can understand what he means, sure, Jesus could talk about the lilies of the field etc too ... but I'm not sure Lennon doesn't mean stay stoned and don't get out of bed. And Yoko doesn't have to shave her armpits either. Yeah.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

See, he was on a nice little poetic roll there and then ... Oh! Let's imagine the ideal world, where "There's no religion!"

Yippeee! EVERYTHING'S FIXED, we got rid of the big R !!!

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Well, even I cannot continue an unbroken stream of piss, okay? I like that little part there okay

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can

Gee, John ... baybee, weren't you a richman?

No need for greed or hunger

"Imagine" no need for greed or hunger? Are you saying there IS a need for greed and hunger NOW?

A brotherhood of man

Thank you for your support, ladies!

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

Aw, does that mean we all share your copyrights to your music? Because my shares in the royalties aren't getting to me, bro!

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
-- John Lennon

I may say you're a dreamer, but more likely I figured ya was just high and feeling blissful, but then didn't re-read the lyrics.

But my big beef is with the people who think he just wrote an "inspirational song" or the kid who sings it on AMERICAN IDOL without realizing what he's singing is pretty offensive to some of his voters?

i read an interview with john lennon about 6 months ago, and in it he said that he wasn't a big fan of the song either. he was convinved that in time he would write much better music. i personally like the song, but i think it wouldn't be quite so iconic had he not been killed

It's nowhere near as good at getting across its message as "The Rainbow Connection." And when your song is outstripped by a man with his hand up a frog's ass, that's a bad thing.

ehhe Big Grin
however, having never heard the song and reading it for the first time, the first impression is that it's talking purely about sex. So I imagne she's saying "You're such a good shag, that when it's really bad it's still pretty good". Big Grin

here are the full lyrics:
quote:
There's times where I want something more
Someone more like me
There's times when this dress rehearsal
Seems incomplete
But, you see the colors in me like no one else
And behind your dark glasses you're...
You're something else

Chorus:
You're really lovely
Underneath it all
You want to love me
Underneath it all
I'm really lucky
Underneath it all
You're really lovely

You know some real bad tricks
And you need some discipline
But, lately you've been trying real hard
And giving me your best
And, you give me the most gorgeous sleep
That I've ever had
And when it's really bad
I guess it's not that bad

(Repeat Chorus)

So many moons that we have seen
Stumbling back next to me
I've seen right through and underneath
And you make me better
I've seen right through and underneath
And you make me better
Better... better...

Lady Saw:
You are my real Prince Charmin'
Like the heat from the fire
You were always burnin'
And each time you're around
My body keeps stalin'
For your touch
Your kisses and your sweet romancin'
There's an underside to you
That so many adore
Aside from your temper
Everything else secure
You're good for me, baby
Oh that, I'm sure
Over and over again
I want more

Gwen:
You've used up all your coupons
And all you've got left is me
And somehow I'm full of forgiveness
I guess it's meant to be

(Repeat Chorus)

You're really lovely
Underneath it all
You want to love me
Underneath it all
I'm really lovely
Underneath it all
And you're really lovely

I wouldn't want the love of my life to be lovely underneath all his crap and bs--i want him to lovely, inside and out, having outgrown all the crap and bs. It just sounds like some girl who has a crappy boyfriend but would rather have someone than no one at all, so they convince themselves that their relationship is actually good when it is obviously unhealthy and appalling to anyone with sense and eyes. but maybe that is just my issue.

I think it is purposefully slow for that point. But I agree, the video is funny. The song is kinda meh.

What? That is the worst play on words I've ever heard. Also, you don't have soul. Go listen to Otis Redding.

I looked at the rest of the lyrics when I searched for the Bill Bailey one. I think they're even worse...

What I Am : EDIE BRICKELL

quote:

I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box.
Religion is the smile on a dog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks.
Religion is a light in the fog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?
Don't let me get too deep.

you're proud of being stupid?
