I'm putting this in Flame Wars because the topic is kind of ooky and I'd hate for some poor unsuspecting soul to wander in without a vague idea of what to expect.

I got a phone call from my doctor yesterday telling me that my last PAP results came back abnormal, and that I needed to make another appointment for the immediate future to do a colposcopy and possibly a cervical biopsy.

I looked up the colposcopy test online (here's a nice informative link from WebMD), and now I'm getting a little panicky.

It could be nothing, but it could also mean the presence of pre-cancer or cancerous cells. It's been three years since my last PAP test due to gaps in insurance and a general failure on my part to ever schedule one with Planned Parenthood, so I have no idea how long those cells have been hanging around down there and multiplying. I also never had the HPV vaccine, and while I don't regret my thought process or decision making behind it, I can't help but "what if..." a little.

If the colposcopy results also come back abnormal, then we move into the biopsy phase which could involve all sorts tests from shaving bits off with an electrically charged wire to full on invasive cutting with general anesthesia, all with some sort of risk to becoming pregnant in the future.

I could be making a huge deal out of nothing, but my brain is GREAT at playing the worst case scenario game, and I could really use some vibes and advice right now.

Don't let your mind get carried away. I know it's easier said than done, but it won't help the situation.

it's natural to worry about the worst case scenario, just so long as you keep in mind that it's also a very unlikely one. Smears come back 'abnormal' for all sorts of reasons, and a lot of the time it's simply that it looked funny and they want to be sure, with nothing wrong at all.

my last one but one came back abnormal too, but when i scheduled a follow up one, it was perfectly normal. abnormal can just mean "not clear enough" or "was done at just the wrong time of the month" or whatever. so don't worry too much about it, ok?

2nd agrees with what is said before, most of the time it's not a problem, so try not to worry too much.

3rd ~~here's to it being nothing vibes~~

oh, and in the UK only every 3 years are recommended anyway if previous ones were normal, so I'd not worry too much about the time elapsed.

(((vibes))))

It could be as simple as being taken too close to your menstrual period on either side- has a tendency to skew results.

You guys are so awesome. Smile

I'm feeling slightly less freaked out now that I've had time to process it, but still definitely worried. My appointment's been scheduled for next Tuesday, and I've started looking around for a gynecologist. Not that I don't trust my GP, but it would be nice to have the option of a second opinion if the results come back abnormal again.

I'll keep you posted.

My sis had the same thing and after months of retests and lost labs it turned out to be nothing. She was mightily stressed about it, I hope you don't have to go through all that.

This happened to me too (well, not the retests and lost labs...), and it also turned out to be nothing.

Better safe than sorry, I guess!

Anyway, don't freak out too much. Like others have said, it's probably just a wonky test and nothing to worry about.
