This thread is aimed at the ladies, but I guess the gents could share their wives experiences.

i'm hoping that putting this thread in flame wars is overkill, as I'm not a fan of TMI, but I having used the same contreception for a lot of years now (a combined pill) for a couple of reasons i'm considering changing.

here's the choices available in the UK :

talkchoice

I'm currently tempted by the implant, as it's long lasting and simple. But would i forget to get it replaced in 3 years time! How uncomfortable is is?

so, what have you used and how did you find it?

i have one of these and after the first month or so, it has been fanTAStic. much lighter, less painful periods, no having to remember to take a pill, brilliant for me. I specifically have a Mirena and aside from an INSANELY painful first 5 days after insertion, and a fairly bloody first 40 days or so, it has been perfect for me.

owy!

my nurse didn't recommend those if you hadn't had children - she didn't say you *couldn't*, just that it was more likely to be painful, as you clearly found out.

They took me off the pill due to my smoking. I am currently on Nuva. I should be happy with this, but man, i keep forgetting when to stop, when to start... *shakes head* It's painless and mild on the hormones. It's juts that i'm too hopeless to use it properly.

from my point of view it was better to have that pain than the regular agony of periods.

I had the Depo Provera shot for 5 years and I loved it. Few, if any, periods and almost 100% effective. There was a little weight gain for me, but that was also partly cause I didn't exercise. And I preferred hormonal weight gain of that sort than from getting pregnant at that point in time. Razz

Tried the pill = my first episode of severe depression

Had a non hormonal IUD (IUS or IUCD) which resulted in extremely painful periods for the first 9 months and then heavier ones for the next 2 years, I'm not sure why I left it in as it causes so much pain I was afraid removal would hurt as bad as insertion I think, which it wasn't when i actually got it removed.

Then regular condoms for a few years until I became allergic to them = extreme pain during and after sex

Now I'm just on the new non-latex condoms

hehe way tmi sorry guys!

I can't do any of the hormonal stuff due to my brains affinity with depression.

i'm on the pill for the first time ever - for various reasons the Minotaur and i have decided to wait on the whole having-kids thing, so yeah.
it's treating me pretty well so far - i was horribly moody and grumpy the first week of taking it, and got a little scared, but i leveled out, and everything is going fine Smile

I've been on the pill for a while now, and I'm tempted to try NuvaRing, but I'm concerned that while I can remember the pill (every day, take it when I put in my contacts and brush my teeth in the morning) I don't have any automatic reoccuring thing that happens on a monthly basis to remind me to replace the ring. Weird, but I think I'd be more likely to forget it if I didn't have to do it as frequently.

I'm not a huge fan of the pill, but I've had friends with some really bad experiences with Depo, so I wouldn't try that. One of them got the 6-month version, and her period just never stopped for that whole time. Another said that it absolutely killed her libido, to the point that she felt like she'd been fixed. She was actually cool with that - it led her to make better dating choices. But I'm a married lady, and I'm not standing for it.

Except when my husband says stuff like this...

Christy's on the NuvaRing and has it down to a monthly ritual. Same approximate time, same time in the evening and everything, and they give you stickers for your calendar. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I'm on the implant. Is good! Very simple and painless to insert it, you don't notice it's there at all day-to-day, and they give you a card to put in your wallet with the date when you should get it taken out again. I can't remember if they said they would call/e-mail me when it's coming up for the 3-year mark, too.. eh, three years, it's so far away that it will never happen and therefore shouldn't be worried about!
I get about 1 day's period a month, but they say it varies person to person. It did make my boobs shrink a little, but there's not much to lose on that front anyway. Generally I would recommend it!

(Although every few days I do have a horrible moment of stomach-dropping panic when I think I forgot to take my pill)
