(AKA the watch a sleep deprived, headachey, not with it James ramble about alcohol thread Wink ).

Posted just because the Irish in me feels that now would be a good time to be pleasantly buzzed. Wink

Not going for it though, way too much alchoolism running in my family, (both sides), to listen when this compunction starts speaking up. Plus, it seems like everytime I do go and have a drink, I discover my tolerance is better than I thought. Which is a dangerous trap of its own. Starts making you think there's no harm in just having one or two... then one more, and maybe just another one, etc.

Still though, some nights it's harder resisting that little siren call than others. *Goes off to make some tea*

um yes it is

i hope you are taking the piss, cause seriously the predisposition to become alcoholic is a genetic trait, it's similar with most addictive substance abuse

Which is why keeping cannabis on the banned substances list in most countries on the basis that research has shown that certain groups have very bad reactions to it is grossly stupid as well as a violation of individual rights

thats not the basis it is make illegal for

mostly its due to the fact that its more carcinogenic than cigarettes (if you don't use filters), and doesn't have the big money of cigarette companies backing it

it also stays in your system for 6 months, and messes with your brain during that time, basically if you are a depressive and you smoke it, you greatly increase the chance of going ahead and topping yourself.

and what does that have to do with what i said?

I was referring to studies that indicate a genetic basis to those who become addicted to and experience psychosis as a result of taking cannabis. I`ve been smoking it on and off for the last twenty years with no ill-effects at all, and neither have any of my friends. We don`t ban alcohol because a minority can`t handle it, so what`s the real deal with marijuana?

It can`t be the interests of the tabacco companies because - with their track record on concealment apropos any `risk` from their *legal* products, I expect they`d leap at the chance of a new money spinner. To me it`s all about `nannying` the individual, taking away our rights (And given time our capacity) to make our own choices and abdicating the whole idea of personal responsibility to an all-powerful state which micromanages the lives of it`s `citizens/serfs`.

As far as carcinogenic effects are concerned, that discounts the amount of cannabis you`d have to smoke. It`s undoubtedly much stickier than cigarette smoke, but is generally smoked in much smaller quantities and when consumed cannot penetrate as far *into* the lungs as tobacco, because of the relative courseness of the particulate matter ingested.

Heh, James, I feel for you.
I get this urge to pour myself a glass of wine every week when I start cleaning the appartment. The horrible thing is, it really is easier and more rewarding to hoover and wash and wipe once you've had a glass.
So I stay grimly sober and viletempered instead, lest I become one of those unwitting alcoholics.

I'm at work, and I would much rather be at the bar. Chris and I were going to go to the sushi place around the corner last night and get sake, but it closed too early, so we went to a sushi place we had to drive to, and neither one of us got sake. :-(

I've been informed that alchoholism runs in my family (on both sides, actually) but since I don't usually drink more than once a week, and rarely more than a glass or two of wine at a time, I think I'm okay. I've never felt any desire to drink more.

Of course, now that I know it makes housework more fun... that may change. (Kidding Onions. Mostly.)

I'm about the hit Tongster with a bunch of organic limp celery in the photo.

Yes, I know it looks like I'm branishing a cucumber, but it's celery. (Maybe I should make Bloody Marys?)

Actually, new studies released in the past few months have shown that because of the presence of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, the risks of cancer are much, much lower than tobacco.

Some very progressive research says that THC might even help reduce some forms of brain tumors and that it inhibits cancer cells.

Researchers in Canada also recently created a synthetic cannabinoid --similar to, but stronger, than compounds found in marijuana that can trigger the growth of new brain cells and reduce anxiety and depression. So perhaps, we might not all get to grow our own plants, but the properties of cannabis could benefit many.

That celery sure doesn`t look limp to me..No wonder Tongster decided against posting that picture of his butt cheeks on the Cleavage thread. I never realized how scary you were before! I think I need a drink now Wink

Same here Jocelyn. I think I average about 5-6 drinks a month, depending on what I'm doing!

However...I smoke a lot, so that might be where it's all going!

that's funny; i'm in Canada, and not only have i not heard of this study, but smoking pot tends to make me stupider, more anxious and more depressed. which, for me, is saying a lot. but then, i've always suspected that my brain was in backwards.

that said, i did get nice and drunk at my cousin's Bar Mitzvah on Thursday night, and despite the fact that i needed to be up early Friday morning, it was very much needed.
