well yes, seal hunting for fur, pelts and to a lesser degree food is a big industry in the north eastern part of Canada, especially in Newfoundland
clubbing is the best way to preserve the pelt, rather than shooting. one of the many reasons i hate fur. one of the green party conservatives quit because the party opposes this, however, she said "well, its the livlihood of my riding, how can i oppose it?" and considering there are a lot of issues with the maratime provinces and fisheries in general, its really a difficult issue to tackle. unless you find some other source of income you can't really stop it.
