Out of curiosity, I sent the original post to four guys I know, all in my industry, all current or former co-workers:
  • Guy #1: Outspoken Asian, grew up in San Francisco
  • Guy #2: Laid-back Asian, grew up in the East Bay.
  • Guy #3: Laid-back white, grew up in Michigan.
  • Guy #4:Outspoken white, grew up in Washington.

My exact question to them was:

What is your gut-level reactions to this post, in terms of its content, and in terms of any judgements you make on the poster?

Guy #1 considered it a racial baiting discussion, and judged the author to be an angry individual.

Guy #2 didn't email me back. We happened to have lunch yesterday, and he asked me where the heck I'd found the post. I believe he used the words "kinda racist".

Guy #3 didn't email me back regarding this email, though he did email me yesterday about other things. I'm guessing he ignored it.

Guy #4 didn't see the post as racist, but did see it as trolling. This is probably because I didn't give them any context on where I found it, or what type of forum it is. Guy #4 also assumed the poster was non-white, which puts an interesting spin on it, as he then saw it as a diatribe on why white men can't appreciate non-white women.

So, of the four people in my industry I sent it two, the two Asians saw it as racist to borderline racist, one white didn't answer, and one white thought it was a diatribe by a non-white against white men that wasn't really racist.

That's too small of a sampling size to be really useful, and it makes me wonder what non-Asian minorities in the industry may view it as. The Asian minority in my industry is somewhat unique, though, in that there are a lot of us working at a professional, technical expert level to the point where we rival or exceed the combined numbers of everyone else, but few of us working at the upper management levels. No other minority really has our numbers at this level. Also, the Asian community in the biotech area is a relatively new one, in that we're all only one or two generations in the US. So we're looking at a group that has a signficant presence as experts, but does not have a significant history in the industry. And they're looking at the levels of management, and seeing no representation.

Just a quick question re: the Bay Area - Would it have made any difference if Panda had had his thizz face on when he started the initial thread?

    Yes. Yes it would.

What exactly is a thizz face?

Wow, normally when I drop a random aside like that the thread gets killed and stays killed.

According to a number of recent articles about Yay Area music in the pretentious UK music press, thizz face is the name given to the anguished gurning of a person who has taken entirely too much of the recreational drug Ecstacy. Apparently it resembles the face of one who has just sniffed some rat wee-wee.

Not that I'm implying that Panda had either taken a bunch of pills or sniffed some rat pee, or is ever likely to do so either. I just thought I'd have a stab at killing this here thread. Guess I'm losing my touch...

Oh hell yes, esp. #2 & #3. RAWR.

i'll join the admiration society for women who are of mixed race. Wink

better watch out! people will start calling you guys racists soon!

Apparently you have to watch yourself so closely if you even mention race around here that someone will obviously go overboard and take things the wrong way....
You wanna whine, do it in the threads dedicated to the topic, don't clutter up other topics.

As a matter of fact, "Yellow Fever" is a topic that gets mocked quite a bit in the Asian communities of the Bay Area.
