Not really. In the Christian Satan vs. God battle, there isn't a stage in church history where the predominant theology gives any sort of edge to Satan.

Also, in some areas of the world, most notably Eastern Europe, the witch or local equivalent could escape execution unless certain very strict rituals were observed.

In many cases, yes, but the Eastern European variation on the witch execution, for example, often happened out of simple paranoia or a community's need to find a scapegoat for its problems.

I agee it was all about parania/scapegoting but I imagine Bob the well liked Thatcher was never accused of being a witch. However, the strange old widow down the street always creeped me out...

Yes, I suppose so... they weren't exactly the best of times...

You are an Illuminator. You add color and beauty to anything you can get your hands on: books, tavern signs, clocks, small barnyard animals. While your work goes largely unappreciated, at least it pays the bills. Why, that enormous golden M you painted for the new Scottish restaurant down the street netted you a farthing!

My favorite quote about the witch trials ever comes from Robin Briggs' "Witches and Neighbours"

quote:

Charges of nocturnal conspiracy, black magic, child murder, orgiastic sexuality and perverted rituals were nothing new in Europe when they were applied to witches. They had been used against the early Christians, then later against Jews, lepers and heretics, […] the stereotype is obvious; it consisted of inverting all the positive values of society, adding a lot of lurid details (often borrowed from earlier allegations) then throwing the resulting bucket of filth over the selected victims.

(Briggs, 32)

One day, I will actually take the 30-odd page study I wrote on the Burning Times and expand it into a proper thesis as I keep saying I will do...one day...
