quote:
Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman have joined forces with Steve Bing and Robert Zemeckis to bring the oldest written English language myth, Beowulf, to the big screen through the magic of performance capture. Zemeckis will direct from the screenplay by Avary and Gaiman. The project will be financed by Shangri-La Entertainment, which is currently in discussions with Sony Pictures Entertainment to distribute all of its feature films. The film will be produced by Robert Zemeckis, Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke. Martin Shafer will serve as executive producer along with Avary and Gaiman.

I thought I'd heard Neil linked to beowulf before, but he's so busy and linked to so many many things....

I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not.

trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street.

Wow, it'll be neat to see how they make this into a full-length movie. It's such an old-style story, without all the modern dialogue, supporting characters, love interests etc. 'Course they'll add all that..

Cool

I dunno... i've seen a Robert Zemeckis movie i didn't like...
OTOH, he directed the Back to the Future films and 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?', which are some of my fave movies EVER. So this should be good

Is it a really serious script? Or is there room for fun? and can Bob Hoskins and Christopher Lloyd be in it? PWEASE?

From Neil's journal page:

quote:
In 1998 Roger Avary asked me to cowrite a script for Beowulf for him to direct. We went off to Mexico together and wrote it as a sort of Dark Ages Trainspotting, filled with mead and blood and madness, and we went all the way from the beginning of the poem, with Beowulf as a hero battling Grendel, to the end, with Beowulf as an old man fighting a dragon. Robert Zemeckis really liked the script, and his production company, Imagemovers, bought it, for Roger to direct. (Imagemovers had a deal with Dreamworks at the time.)

I seriously had to read the "We went off to Mexico together and wrote it... filled with mead and blood and madness..." sentence a couple of times to realize that Roger and Neil weren't writing while mad drunk in Mexico.

Well, since it's in poetic form, it doesn't read as easily as prose (unless you're used to it). Seamus Heaney's translation/adaptation does read very well though and is definitely worth checking out.
