Hi, just wondering who else has read this one. I'm studying it at school and would love to discuss some of its elements with some other people.

Can you give some more info on the story? There's a few short stories with long names (and "Gothic" is quite subjective, after all).
Roght now I can only think of "One life, furnished with Michael Moorcok" and "When we went to see the end of the world, by [Name I can't remember], aged [number I can't remember]".

And, welcome to the board! Do stick aorund! Smile

Hi,
It's the one titled ' Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the nameless house of the night of Dread Desire'.
It's an absolutely fabulous parody, hilarious and really useful for my English studies at school at the moment.
Have you read it?

Is that a short sotry? If so, where was it published?
For some reason at first I thought it was the narrative bit in one of the dreams of the Spider Sisters in Doll's House (Sandman), but I don't remember there was enough of it to constitute a whole story though...

Yes it is a short story. I found it in the book 'Gothic !' edited by Deborah Noyes.
It's a collection of 'the original dark tales' published in 2004. I would recommend at least reading Gaiman's work. It has given me so much to talk about in the essay I'm writing for school, as well as making me laugh when I read it the first time.

This is the one.

If anyone goes to the library to hunt it down, you'll likely find it in the teen section.

Thanks for putting in the link. I hope a few people read it so that I can talk to people about it. I had fun trying to describe the techniques used.....nearly pulled my hair out!

I've read it. Also in the book Gothic. Was browsing my favourite book store and came across something that looked interesting.

Saw Neil's name on it and had to buy it.

Hi,
Did you enjoy it?
I love the way you really had to think about what was going on, but then you get to the end and realise that it's absolute genius!
I particularly love the line "Save your eternal argh!" HAHAHAHAHA
Does anyone have any comments?

@ Young and Naive - HA, if only

I'm wondering why are you studying a Gaiman's book for school. Unfortunately I've never studied Gaiman at school. *Sigh*.

To Eredhel,
As a class or unit we're not just studying Gaiman. We're doing a unit on gothic literature and had to find a second text to analyse, along side Stoker's Dracula, in an essay. As you can imagine I found Gaiman's story and fell in love with it. I must admit that before that I hadn't heard of him. It was more the fact that it was a parody that caught my eye; I love anything that makes you think twice. Now I wish we did do more on him, I'm sure everyone would engage in his work.
Have you read the story I'm talking about?

Keep Smiling!

I haven't read the story, alas. In fact, I've read only Gaiman's most famous books, as Coraline, Anansy Boys, Neverwhere, Wolves in Walls, American Gods, Stardust and Good Omens (I'm reading it now, in fact). Unfortunately, here in Italy (Milan) we haven't all his works, and not them all are translated. We haven't even an official italian forum, so I've come here although my english is not very well yet Roll Eyes

I was pleasantly surprised to find it was the opening short story in an anthology I bought called "The Mammoth Book of New Comic Fantasy" edited by Mike Ashley. I said to myself - Ah! So That's the story Neil talks about on his blog as the one with the really long name...lol
The anthology has a ton of great (and of course funny) fantasy stories, so I suggest it to everyone here. Also, the editor said his reason for putting it first was because it says a lot about storytelling and the genre of fantasy in general.
