This one caught me off guard. Has this been discussed anywhere that I might have missed? I only heard about it today, yet it's supposed to be shipping mid-December.

I'm also somewhat puzzled by the numbers on this limited edition.

Click for details.

If you look at the last picture, it says that 1500 copies are being published, 1000 are numbered, 400 are reserved for the author and 100 are reserved for the artist. It's unusual that so many copies are going to the creators. After all, 25 copies of "A Screenplay" were reserved for Neil. Does anyone have any insight into the genesis of this new limited edition? Did you hear anything about it at Fiddler's Green?

It looks beautiful. Is it just the limited edition that's only printing 1500 copies, or is that the entire run of the book?

edit: Oh. It says "the first edition." So there is hope after all. Smile

I haven't had time to read it yet, but it did arrive in the mail today. It appears to be a very well crafted book.

I gave it a quick read planning to go back again. The first time through:
Each page has a full page illustration with one or two lines of text. This means it is a rather short work and quick read. On the first read however, I haven't a clue what it was about and need to have a proper sit down with it to figure it out. The art was well done, either monotone printing or a laid in color plate. The monotone images are pen&ink pieces of ... industrial desolation, sometimes with the title character, a girl, wandering about.
As I said, I need to give it a careful reading to see what it says, so the first reading didn't grab me like some of Neil's stuff does (for example, Bitter Grounds). If the edition had come from a major publisher with a print run for bookshops, the price would be around $20 I'm guessing. For the very small pressing it got, it is very well crafted - I have no complaints at all about that, nor the price. However, for the moment I can't recommend the piece as being one of Neil's more memorable works. (I'm being wishy washy because I want to reserve a change of opinion for my second go through)

Congrats! In the email today came photos of the American Gods lettered edition. OMG it is an object of beauty! It looks fairly different from the prototype on the website, but only to make it more mouthwateringly wonderful.

mmmm, much like a numbered edition, but a more limited (usually 26 or 52 copies), sometimes different sometimes not, edition to make people with too much money want it more. They promote conversations like
"I have one of only 750 copies of this book!"
"I have one of only 52 copies of the deluxe version"
"You bastard. I'd kill you now, but then blood would get on the books. One day, when you don't have the book, my kitty shall kill you, then it shall be mine"

THIS LOOKS GORGEOUS! I've never heard of it. It totally slipped beneath my neildar. Hmmm, this is another I will have to give much consideration to. Much.

Replying to your email, JP:

Hey, what can you tell me about Hill House and the Melinda book? I'm not familiar with Hill House at all. The Melinda book looks something akin to the SGA and MM books that Biting Dog put out, no?

Well, like Biting Dog only in that they are small publishers specializing in pretty books. Hill House's Melida page is here. My review from January remains the same - I haven't gotten around to giving a second reading where I try to decipher the poem. The scans on the Hill House page will show both the art, which I'm fond of (the color pieces moreso than the black and white, which are mainly landscapes) and the sparseness of the text. If you're familiar with the Biting Dog books, those of course have both more content and a high page count. Hill House's book making and binding are just as good, probably better, than Biting Dog (which is not a put down of BD, just a comparison)

As for Hill House in general, though the books are expensive, they look beautiful and are very well made. They seem to have gone quite out of their way to provide extra incentives for subscribers. So far, besides the book I ordered, I also received an extra short story (the Map Room story), an extra book (A Screenplay) and an extra paperback of the American Gods author's preferred edition because people were afraid of using their expensive hardcover! That's a lot of unexpected extras. They have semi-regular email newletters in PDF format, and usually answer questions within a few days.
(If people haven't looked, they publish several other authors of interest, including Ray Bradbury)

Thanks! I think from a uniqueness perspective, I might pick it up. So, you're a subscriber? What does that mean? And what else besides the MM book have you bought from them (Neil or otherwise)? If I get a chance, I'll be dropping them a line tonight or tomorrow.

Clarification: MM, Murder Mysteries, is from Biting Dog Press, as was Snow Glass Apples.
From Hill House: I bought (second hand, not direct) the limited edition of 999 edited by Sarrantonio. It looks storeworthy - slick, very nice looking, doesn't have the hand-crafted feel of other small press books. One oddity is that the signature pages are scattered throughout the book instead of just in the front, as I see more often in signed-by-all-contributors editions.
I bought Melinda, both numbered and lettered, as described above (the books are identical in both editions, but the lettered has a different envelope).
I am a subscriber to the Neil Gaiman Author's Preffered series. What that means is that I prepay for the books, which makes me eligible for the extras I described above (I don't believe latecomers receive extras which have already been distributed), and that I have on hold the same number for each book in the series. If one were to start collecting the books five years from now, it'd be near impossible to get all the books with matching numbers.
(in case someone doesn't understand what I mean: If a book is limited to 750 copies, each copy will have written by hand inside #1, or #2 or #743, get the picture? I can subscribe to a certain number, say #66, so that American Gods is #66/750, Neverwhere is #66/750 Anansi Boys is... well, you get the picture.)
ummm... I don't know what to say beyond that. If you have more questions, ask

Um, yeah. Got my Mirror Mask/Melinda books mixed in my head. I meant Melinda. I've got MM and SGA.

As for the subscribing, that's cool, and I totally get the common number thing (did the same thing with some Star Wars prints from Dave Dorman). Just didn't see any info on it at the web site other than the mention "if you're a subscriber..." on the Melinda order page. I'll drop them a line today. So, what, Hill House publishes special eds. of all his books or something? Sorry if I'm being dense, maybe I'll just e-mail them Smile

Melinda is separate from the subscriptions. Subscriptions are for Neil's novel series. Melinda is a separate project. Hill House emailed everyone early on so that if you wanted matching numbers you could reserve them, but otherwise it's a separate project.
And if you mean by special edition that there's a lettered edition beyond the normal edition, then yes. However, that seems standard for all numbered editions (from my very limited experience). If you mean the numbered edition beyond a regular edition, then no. There is no unnumbered edition
