First post..hehe.

I'm not a collector of books by any means (though I have a lot). Had to order this book, bills can wait. I loved the "Dream hunters" book he did and this looks as though it would exceed that one. I love neil's work. I had read "good omens" and loved it (big pratchett fan) then much later found out about sandman. I'm re-reading sandman and sandman companion now. Just started searching for gaiman and found this site (don't know why I never did before..better late than never). Look forward to Melinda.

On the first read however, I haven't a clue what it was about and need to have a proper sit down with it to figure it out. The art was well done, either monotone printing or a laid in color plate. The monotone images are pen&ink pieces of ... industrial desolation, sometimes with the title character, a girl, wandering about.
As I said, I need to give it a careful reading to see what it says, so the first reading didn't grab me like some of Neil's stuff does (for example, Bitter Grounds). If the edition had come from a major publisher with a print run for bookshops, the price would be around $20 I'm guessing. For the very small pressing it got, it is very well crafted - I have no complaints at all about that, nor the price. However, for the moment I can't recommend the piece as being one of Neil's more memorable works. (I'm being wishy washy because I want to reserve a change of opinion for my second go through)

Hi GMZoe,

I just got my copy of Melinda, and I think it's lovely.

What I think the poem is about: the daydream of a young (homeless maybe) girl who has seen a lot of barren ugliness in life and yet still is able to construct an inner world full of rich and strange images and happenings.

Did you have any further thoughts on it?

love,
g

I just got Melinda this weekend, #49 of Neil's 400.(and while that's a lovely thing, I like the book even without the numbers).

I think the story is lovely and stark, as is the artwork. The color illustrations are beautiful, but all those black and white ones "fit" the story in my mind.

And for some reason, to me it evokes Kosovo.
*shrugs*
I'm not sure why

I, undoubtedly because of the artist's nationality, thought of communist Poland. Definitely stark.

Number 49 of Neil's 400 -- cool!

I just received my copy of Melinda. Wonderful little story. I won't give too much away, but look at what's written on her cap. Look at the rats then the picture next to them...notice any 'similarities'? Look closely at the pike images: exactly whereis Melinda with the pike? Think about this then re-read the story.

I'm slightly relieved that some people have received copies. I ordered mine back in September and haven't heard anything since (other than Hill House taking my money!)

Has anyone got any contact details for them other than the addresses/number on the website? They don't seem to reply to emails or answer their phone!

Hurrah! Finally managed to get hold of someone there today and my books are apparently on there way. I'm slightly less worried now :-)
