my big sis got me hooked on the sandman series and then i progressed to the masterful books. i used AG in my english comparison for which i got an A. thanka to mr Gaiman *fangirls and hugs an imaginary Gaiman(who is obviously scared)
because there's not enough time for me to fangirl over everyone in the world... |

I'd been hearing a lot about Gaiman, butI had never read anything of his until about a year and a half ago where my older sister got my older brother Coraline. He never even picked it up, but I fell in love with it (That happens often. She'll try and get him into something, and instead I'd find it). I've been getting stuff of his ever since.

I read "Neverwhere" first on vacation a year or so ago and I liked it but didn;t think it all that extraordinary.
Then I read "American Gods" and realized I'd found an author of rare gifts. I can't say enough about this book. Anybody can rip off mythology and recast it, Neil showed a real understanding of fairytale and myth, a real "going into it". He was able to mine out some really startling stuff. Shadow on the World Tree is some of the best writing I've ever encountered. Czernobog is a character I will never forget. I then read "Anansi Boys" and "Stardust" in quick succession, the former was better than the latter but the latter was actually more like "AG" with the myth-mining and such. I'm reading through "Fragile Things" right now... +†+ "The worst thing about prison was the Dementors. They were flying all over the place, and they were scary. I was at a comics bookstore, just browsing around. Then I chanced upon "Stardust" and after reading the first book, I waited for the rest of the books to come out with great anticipation. For years, it has been my favorite "to-read-all-over-again". When I "discovered" it on audio CD just a week ago, I felt like I won a million dollars. Listening him read makes "Stardust" more exciting. I have picked up two graphic novels since, but it seems like there aren't much in the bookstores.

Hello everybody! Ok. Since this will be my first post, I figure what better place to start than here.
My daughter had Coraline from the library and was reading it, when a friend droppped by to visit. Noticing Coraline, he asked her, "Have you ever read 'Neverwhere'?" She hadn't, But I said, "Neverwhere...I have that. I just bought it at a church rummage sale! Is it good?" This was years ago. I now buy Neil's books at book stores...unless I'm broke...then I have to borrow from the library until I'm not broke. This message has been edited. Last edited by: theolbiddy, |

I have a friend that had been reading quite a lot of Sandman, and just rammed "Preludes and Nocturnes" into my hands, and said that I could not talk to her until I had read it at least once. What could I do? :-)
After that I was well and truly hooked. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Quidquid latinae dictum sit, altum viditur. |

season of mists in the school library-it was totally unlike anything i'd read before, although i already had a healthy obsession with fantasy. absolutely loved it, i read the other one the school had (world's end) and tried to get more... unfortunately they're so expensive! i would love to have them all, and all the books of magic, etc but i really can't afford it :-( one day...
but i just watched mirrormask today and i am in awe... incredible ____________________________________________________ Did you know? "Smoke & Mirrors" was my first NG book...the first of many. I've just finished "Fragile Things"; not my fave, not even close. Seems rather patchy to me.

I had not heard about Gaiman till a friend of mine suggested me "NEVERWHERE". On my blog we elect a book and then we all read it at the same time. We proposed this work and it was elected by the other people in the forum. We are reading now the spanish translation and people say, it was a positive susprise for them.
Excuse my poor English. |

I was twelve years old. I was at the local library, looking for a good book. I had just finished a book by Donna Jo Napoli, a rather good author... and then I came across Coraline.
I was hooked, and I mean hook, line and sinker After I finished it I tried Good Omens, then Stopped 1/2 way through, and then read the first three Books of Magic. Then I read Stardust, then Neverwhere. Thats all it took... |

2001? I think. I needed something to read and my good frined suggested that I try this graphic novel series called "The Sandman." I opened up Preludes & Nocturnes and didn't finish "Sleep of the Just." I returned the book to my friend saying I wasn't much interested and I would stick with Gaiman's short stories. Sometime later, my friend explained that Neil himself says the beginning of the series is rough as he was still trying to find the voice - or something like that and my friend urged me to try again. It was with a "Hope in Hell" that the Sandman had me hook, line and sinker. I went through the entire series within a week and have continued to re-read it on and off to the present day. Thank-you, Neil and my good friend, G.

I read Good Omens years ago when I was really into Terry Pratchett, then a while later I read Mr. Punch which scared the hell out of me and I couldn't go to sleep with it in the room. Then about a year ago I got Smoke and Mirrors out the library. Then the Sandman descended into my life and everything became bathed in a glorious white light and I perceived the meaning behind all things.

I had a $150 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble (Most of my family gave my one)am a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, and hadn't read Good Omens. When the cashier guy saw it he asked me if I liked Neil Gaiman. When I told him I didn't know, because I hadn't read anything by him, he went and got like..everything. Ever. I bought what I could afford and now believe the cashier guy was an angel.

An angel or one of Gaiman's lackeys. Yeah that is great
OH YEAH!! I just remembered. The first time I read Sandman it was actually The Dream Hunters, because I thought the picture on the cover looked like the concept art for Final Fantasy games. In fact I thought it HAD to be the same artist, and it was, and so it was that two pieces of the great jigsaw puzzle of damn good fiction fit together. ---------------------------------- Black Wings loves all of you, even though many of you are new since he vanished for a year. It was this fall in my Drawing and Design for Illustration course. As an assignment, we had to introduce the class to an illustrator and their work. Well, someone chose Dave McKean and showed a clip from MirrorMask. So, I thought, "Wow, what a really cool/creepy/weird movie! I should watch that." And I did over winter break and wondered who else worked on this wonderful thing. I found out Neil Gaiman wrote part of it and thought, "Oh yes, I recognise that name. My sequential professor was talking about him while showing us some pages from Sandman." It was Christmas and I was looking for some books to read when I went back to school and thought I'd try Neverwhere. And then...it flew off from there.

Sheer perversity.
My older sister was obsessed, but thought that my sweet little pre-adolescent mind would be shocked by anything more adult than Coraline. Needless to say my point of view differed slightly on this matter. |

American Gods, when it was released. I had heard about him before and when this was released it had a lot of fanfare so I picked it up. And loved it! Since then Gaiman has introduced me to comics, and I’ve read some of the Sandman, Death, Black Orchid, and others. He is the only reason as to why I read comics today (I didn’t like them as a kid).
Anyway American Gods still holds a special place in my heart because it was the book that turned me onto Neil. |
