You didn't imagine it. It's from the Kindly Ones (chap. 10, p. 22).
Rose is talking about the book she's reading (Here Comes a Candle) and some of the unfamiliar words therein: sinople, lusk, bloater. Her next seat neighbor (they are on an airplane) informs her that a bloater is, "like a kipper, really. You know, a smoked herring . Like you have for breakfast."
