certainly not the worst comic of 2003, but if viewed as best or worst in regards to expectations it could be so for many. The secrecy created too much fan hype. I'm tempted to compare it to Phantom Menace in that regard - so much hype it could never live up to it. PM was not great, but it isn't as bad as many make it out to be. Ditto for 1602. It's ok, but not great, and not the worst

Maybe I am speaking too soon. (I have read up to number five) but so far I really like "1602". The story is interesting and the art is great!

I was disapointed with "Endless Nights". I liked Chapter 3 but found the rest reduntant and a bit stale.

I haven't read 1602, but Time is mostly bullshit anyways. Seriously, have you read that crap? Right-wing propaganda. Ever since it gave Bush man-of-the-year for stealing the fucking election.

call me stupid but I still kind of enjoy it although my initial enthusiasm has subseeded a lot.

So this is my 2 cent: if something I think more of the fans expectation it didn't live-up to the premises!!
I loved the first and second number then it sort of become a little tedious. What I mean is that the set-up of the story (20-1th century superheros dressed-up in elisabethian style), was its greatest appeal (genius and very original idea, I think) and it had everyone glued to the story waiting for what was next but then ... well nothing really has happened yet and we are already at the 5th issue!! it's like he had the perfect ingredients and tools for the most delicious cake and he had everyone salivating for it but it has been in the oven for 40 min now and hasn't rised yet. this is very frustrating I know, but there's still 3 issue to go and I would give Gaiman the benefit of the doubt instead of turning desperatly for the ready-mix in the cabinet!!

And this dosen't even generate huge "ohhh... a Vertigo writer is coming to Marvel!" enthusiasm 'cause almost all of Neil's fellow Brits have already been with them for more then a year...

Still, i'm reserving judement until i read it... and really, i'm rather easy to please when it comes to Marvel comics. If its got enough obscure in-jokes, keeps true to the characters, and has some geeky Pete Parkerness and utterly badass Dr. Doom-ness, i should be fine....

lot's of in-jokes ans geeky Pete Perkerness for my point of view, not to mention badass Dr. Doom-ness, Yes I think you should like it.
And I think he did keep true to the charachters, at least the ones I knew about (which is not too much to tell the truth). I'm a dare devil reader and I mostly enjoyed his 1602 version, and the black widow too. And I know x-men mainly from the movies but he rendered them very well in my opinion, particularly I liked grey and cyclop, he's just the same jalous dickhead he normally is . i loved also how some character were changed to fit the xvii century (cap america, fury)
I think it will be actually much more enjoyable once it's collected, it removes the all rising-cake waiting frustration that I was telling about.

I bought issues 1 and 2 in the States--they promptly got packed and I haven't read them yet. Had a chance to buy 4 and 5 at Forbidden Planet last weekend, but didn't because I couldn't find 3...

So, should I rue my decidion, or just wait for the Trade Paperback? From what you guys are saying I'm thinking just wait...

Count me as someone who has become more (not less)satisfied with 1602 with every passing issue. You can see all the events leading together at the end of five and I'm depressed it'll take another three months find out what the heck I'm actually reading.

I was happy enough with it when I thought it was just a "what if" story. Now that I keep hearing it is a major event within the Marvel Universe I'm very intrigued to know what exactly "it" is.

I had the same feeling reading "the Kingdom", the medicore sequel to "Kingdom Come". It went from "oh, this is a crap sequel" to "this is a crap sequel that's going to effect the entire DCU" to "does that mean Bat-Mite and Captain Carrot will show up again? cool"

I've Read every issue, with a little more irritation, at the story's lacking an apparent direction, but with #6, it all makes since, and I am pushing to see what happened in six become the moment of 2004/3.
It was fantastic, cannot wait until 7and8 come out.

But I seem to have missed something, where Did Captain America make his appearance, should I reread it or is it very obvious, I don't recall seeing him anywhere.

no, no big red birds (yet).

He's Virginia's big blonde guardian, Rojhaz (like Rogers, as in Steve Rogers, Captain America). It's the only thing they could do. Who else were true Americans at that point? but they still managed to make it just obvious enough with the blond hair and blue eyes. And then when he throws that tray like a frisbee (or shield) at the flying assassin... I think that was #3, maybe 4.

I've just read number 5 of 1602...THE PLOT LINE ROCKS I/m just mad at Matthew for being a moron and telling Natasha everything she wanted to know...I didn't trust her from the time Matthew said she was the most dangerous women in Europe...AND WHAT ABOUT PETER if he is spiderman? where is his power? right now he is a servant boy

I'm pretty sure Neil's just trying to make a joke of him. He keeps almost getting bitten by various spiders, creatures which he finds fascinating. But he never quite makes it to his fate.
