well, it's late - it was due last week but wasn't there - and now I can't get to my comic shop for anothe r3 or 4 weeks!

I'd say keep the reviews spoilerless in the meantime but since I've read the book and seen the show!

and are you thinking of serenity del? that's due in July.

Well, I already knew I wasn't a fan of the art from the preview - Glen Fabry just isn't my favorite artist. I saw the TV show before I read the book, and I liked the way a lot of the characters looked - Croup and Vandemar, Door, the Marquis. When I read the book, I saw their faces. Seeing the comic, I had to look up the character descriptions becuase the designs were so bizarre. they changed the marquis "very dark face" into a face pitchblack that only has eyes and a mouth. The beast is shown. It's not a cow. It goes the other direction. In the book, Neil said it was the size of a bull that is reminiscent of a boar... this is something a bit grander nothing at all like a boar.

The writing is fine, not terrible not too special. The story flows, and works. He (wisely) skips the prologues. Felt the richardmayhewricharddick joke fell flat, but otherwise worked.

So, having heard nothing of this til now, did Neil write it? If Neil didn't write it (or work it into a comic, you know what I mean) then based on GMZoe's review, I prolly won't buy it. If I get to the comic shop this weekend, I'll check it out.

It's written by Mike Carey, art by Glen Fabry. 9-issue adaptation of the book. There was a previous thread with alternate opinions from when the news about it first came out (I'll look for the link in a sec). Really, I'm just not a fan of Fabry and it's really coloring my opinion of the book.

edit: too late, that's what I get for opening windows and then getting distracted!

double edit: I like fabry as a cover artist, I'm not sure if I like him for a full book.

It's mike carey I've never really enjoyed!

but I'll still be getting it because I have 'mug' written on my forehead.

Metafilter is discussing it
the general consensus is that the art is too broad and 'comic booky'... then there are people talking about how its not Neil's best novel...

i dunno... i agree with most of the stuff there, though i don't post. its a popular site, though... thought ya'll would be interested

they should have waited for Gaiman to do it.

I mean, I like Carey.
His Hellblazer and Lucifer runs are pretty much all I'm basing it on.

They could have gotten the people who put out BOM: Life after Wartime.

They look like they could have put out something that the fans could have agreed on.

maybe with Leonardo Manco art.

Fabry is good at what he does. This isn't it, really.

at least it wasn't liefield.

Had a quick look at it today. Didn't like hoq the Marquis is drawn & the beast looks like a poor knock off of a Loivecraft monster.

I'm the same way. It has Neil's name of the cover so I got to buy it.

I haven't seen the series (it's in my netflix que right now) but none of the characters looked anything like I immagined them.
That, and I was dissapointed that they didn't include the opening bit with the umbrella, which was, I thought, just about perfect. I didn't think it would be possible for Dick to be more whipped, but boy, was I surprised. I'm not going to buy more of it, I think. Possibly I'll pick it up if it gets collected, and lists under $10.

got it today.. I don't know.. I don't like it. It's just not special. the art blows, the story..well, I know the story.
I seriously considering not buying the future issues, and maybe just getting the TP if it comes out, for the sake of collecting.
I have to admit that for something I waited for so long? I'm dissapointed.

Yeah, saw it this weekend, picked it up, flipped through it, put it down, picked it up again, tried to look at it more closely and really discern if I wanted it or not ... and put it back down. I agree, Mikka, the art was very "eh", and really, for a story we already know, it had to be the art that made the book really worth. I'm passing on the series.

It's a shame that what I thought would be an excellent team-up could turn out like this. I'm still reserved that the "monster" might not look like that once Richard really fights it, though. But the character designs look mostly really bad... but I've ordered issues #2 and #3 to see if it turns out any better. I can always trade them in if I'm not pleased.

Still, I want to see Fabry's take on Islington... that can turn out really hilarious Smile

im not really expecting anything from a mediocre artist (based on the reviews), so chances are i'm not buying in.

i have a question for you people who bagged the first issue:

would neverwhere be better off without the comic adaptation?
