Shadwell didn't step into the circle. Aziraphale was trying to stop him (Shadwell) from stepping into the circle and Aziraphale accidentally stepped into it and discorporated.
I think discorporated is the proper word, although I could be wrong. I mean that his spirit left his body. Shadwell had been holding a book, bell and fire - his lighter - and pointing his finger at Aziraphale and assumed that he had banished a "demon" when Aziraphale disappeared. That was my take on it. edited to add: Welcome aboard! Come join us in the World's End section for general chat and a Red Welcome Balloon! oh! well, it wasn't a circle, exactly, it was a pentacle, I think. or at least a "magic circle" like the ones that are generally associated with satanists.

But isn't a pentagram upside down a positive symbol or something? Like part of some protective spells? I guess the point would be that everything is a matter of interpretation and most things we think of as evil are just plain silly. Or that we think that something is evil because we don't understand it. |

The thing is that a pentagram isn't an "evil" symbol. Not originally, anyway. It all depends on how you look at it.
It symbolises Venus in some instances, and is a protective symbol against demons and witches in medieval christianity. With S A L V S inscribed at the points, it symbolises health (Salus). Though if you turn it upside down (two points up), then it's a different matter. Satanists inscribe the head of Baphomet (a goat's head) in it to symbolise a demon. Oh, and hello everybody..
