Is it true the UK version of NEVERWHERE is significantly different from the US one?

Book version or movie version? (I heard they're making a more expensive movie of it- originally it was a miniseries on BBC.)

There are differences with the UK and US version of the Neverwhere books, but nothing that drastically changes the story. If you are able to, you could pick up a copy of the UK book from www.amazon.co.uk

Interesting, Quid. You know, I tried AmazonUK. Do you think the Headline edition is the UK version?

I think the American version had some text added explaining things to non British people that wouldn't have made sense otherwise. I think they removed a couple of things that would have required so much explaining of London that it just wasn't worth it. Nothing that has any real effect on the story though.

GMZoe will probably (OK, certainly) know.

scotte...I don't know if it's the Headline version, but I imagine that any version from amazon.co.uk would be the UK version unless it specifically says US version....I just can't remember the publisher...

denver, there are subtle differences in the UK version...things that people from England would understand better, but the biggest difference really is that in the US version there is a bit with Croup and Vandemar at a monestary.

I have both versions and have read them both. The story is pretty much the same, but there are differences. If you are able to, I recommend getting both versions, but unless you are a collector or obsessive like I am, there's really no need.

My UK paperback was published by penguin (and includes the second prolgue with Croup and Vandemar at a monestary. It was added to later UK editions)

(running through very very fast)
Neil has described the difference between the UK and the US as cutting 2000 words (from UK) and adding 10000 (to US). iirc, This was mostly to do with editor's suggestion on cutting some UK humor and needing to explain UK locales for US audiences.

The most infamous difference between the books is the original UK edition had a second prologue, but that prologue is not currently in either the US or UK editions. The prologue is available online (posted with permission) at The Dreaming (see neilgaiman.com links page)
