Getting older is just regular bowel movements and unwanted hair.
Every day that you wake up and you haven't got any new pains is a bonus. ................................................... There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more. |

I don't have anywhere new that could hurt. (everything does)
I'm kinda old, but I still crave stories. Here is boring, stories are fun. Plus, I have a seven year old son, all those stories that are old and worn out to me are new and bright and shiny for him, so when I relay those stories, they become new for me, too. I would have thought the end of the world is everyone's responsibility, wouldn't you? ~Death in Thief of Time Minister of Kraftwerk in the Realm of U & P, Order of the Pineapple with frond for advancement in Nap studies. |

I'm 40. Physically I have aches and pains, and most of them are from crazy things I did in my 20s! So I don't really like that aspect of aging, the physical decline. But as far as myself as a person, I am so much better behaved now. I used to be a selfish twit. The years have taught me alot about the person I want to be, and how I want to impact those around me.

I admit I really don't understand the original phrase and what exactly is meant by it. And in this thread I've seen these "stories" defined in several different ways by others, too (which is good because otherwise I think I'd now be feeling kinda dumb).
So, stories, as in... the hypothetical, the possibilities and uncertainties of life, including your own fantasy or the unknown future? Or stories as in just what many respectable grown ups spend hours devouring every day in the form of TV, movies, books, gossip, news (are true stories included?), internet boards? I don't know, I get annoyed when I don't really know what it is I'm supposed to talk about. But I wanna hit 1000 posts soon, too, so I'll just keep rattling. As far as factual aging is concerned, one thing that keeps surprising me is how immature most grown ups I know (including me) really remain. It can be endearing, and sometimes a bit shocking. Anyway. It doesn't seem to me like most people ever lose their interest in stories. Just that at a certain age, many start assuming they already know how most will end. ------------------------------------------------- Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here. |

me too! at least i'm trying to. i kind of feel like i'm working on having the sort of social life and experiences that i should have had when i was younger, but now i have the maturity to actually know how to go about it. if i get into grad school i intend to act like the crazy university student i never was my first time around. i am angry at the world that you will not be joining me there in 2008, SP!!! _______________________________________ WARNING: the preceding message is not to be taken personally. I was so excited when I went back to grad school, since it was a state school and I could finally enjoy the real college town bar experience. And it was fun, but the bartenders all called me "sir" and looked at me like I was their father, which was rather disappointing. |

yeah. even though you never really know. I kinda think the original statement has some truth in it. when you're young and still in the process of creating yourself, there're lots of stories swirling around your head. what you'll see, what you'll do, who you'll meet, who you'll love, where you'll go. and your life is a routine designed by someone else, large parts of which seem pointless. (why exactly do I have to eat all of those green beans before I can leave the table? what is the point of long division? who the hell are you to tell me when I have to be home?) the stories are more important because you have your whole life ahead of you to plot out and make happen. but I also remember the stories my grandmother told me when I was little. they were never made-up stories or what-ifs. they were about a little girl and a little boy and their childhood, the trouble they got into and the pranks they pulled. I knew perfectly well as a five-year-old that the little girl who painted herself rather than her tricyle red was my mother and the little boy who jumped from the barn loft was my uncle. they weren't just stories; they were life. at 60, my grandmother thought about her life: what she'd seen, what she'd done, who she'd met, who she'd loved, where she'd gone. the narrative stayed the same, really. it's just the context that's different. but it is the difference between a story and real life. ~ We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. But...babies playing a game can make a play-world which licks your real world hollow. That's why I'm going to stand by the play-world. ~ Elite Special Force Procrastinator, trained in High Arts of Extended Coffee Breaks and Master Linguist of the Water Cooler Conversation |

Well as we were talking about stories and getting older, I thought it appropriate to write a poem about The Epic Tale in which Lester became A Zombie. Hope it wasn't too forward. And we do create our own stories. And stories *are* important. Stories are never "just stories", they have the power to inspire. I sometimes wonder if stories don't make up half of how we imagine and reimagine ourselves in life. Stories -as i grow a little more mature- give me that "I can *do* that?!" feeling... ~You are a *Taverner*. Sometimes patrons want to go where everybody knows their names, though it helps when half of them are named John. When people want to celebrate, or commiserate, they gather to your establishment. You provide the atmosphere, the warmth, rum, and even an ear to bend. Did I mention the rum? Years before the language will be mangled with terms like facilitator and networking and interpersonal communication, you've overseen it all, and broken up a few bar fights, to boot.~ -Royko |
