Nachtmystium's new tracks, which are pretty damn good. Psychedelic-influenced black metal with ambient bits, or something like that. Good stuff.

I think they played at a local church bake sale this weekend.

their track "satan's a piemaker" is really good. "necronomuffins" isn't bad either.

I'd buy a blueberry crumb pie from them. I'd be scared not to.

(listening to Nachtmystium through two speakers the size of a paper clip isn't pleasant)

I listen to a lot of music. And, I have a fairly wide range of taste. So, I'm really interested in what other people are listening too. (OK, I don't particularly like Deth Metal.)

However, I find most of posts in the these Listening threads to be uninformative. I don't know if its because the posters are lazy, uninspired or stunned into a lack of words to describe the aural experience. The result is, rarely do posts here move me to find out about the band or album in the post. In most cases, I feel the posts in these threads are just graffiti. At worst, this thread is like a telephone pole: Every non-deaf dog that walks by has to be the last to pee on it.

This is typical of posts in the Listening threads:

Yep.is gud.

This does not tell me a lot. Sometimes, I try to imagine what ˜rocks' and ˜good' may mean to the poster. Things I think are good and rock include:

* Blackberry sorbet
* Cold Pilsner Urquell in a tall glass
* Thick wool socks
* 5-Star Asian Hotels
* The Beatles White album

I can't be sure we have the same enthusiasms.

How does "Clubbing Seal Pups" compare to any of the above? Could it be that: "The lead female vocal Makes-Love-to-Polar-Bears has an ethereal voice and the sung lyrics vividly evoke the cold, stark Arctic Sea. You have not lived, until you hear her ululations?"

Even posts like: "It makes me happy, because it reminds me of when I was young and went clubbing with Navy SEALS.", would cause me to follow-up on the music.

I have a similar complaint about nobody ever thinks something they've bought or are listening to sucks. I would really like to see negative reviews too. You should not be embarrassed for pissing-away your money on crap. Just ensure nobody else make the same mistake.

Just for the record, things I think "suck" include:

* Chinese-style (cooked) chicken feet
* Gagging on the tequila worm from the bottom of the bottle
* Amebic Dysentery
* MS Internet Explorer
* "Chipmunks" albums

Here is an example of an informative negative review.

(A colleague actually described the album this way to me after I lent it to him.)

This is a much better than "Quarstice suks", because I can infer the poster thinks the album lacks melody. Its much, much better then letting me go out and mistakenly buying a ˜Chipmunks' album thinking it's a Ukrainian Electronica.

Oddly, posting that "Quarstice is like Amebic Dysentery", would probably convince me it's a Deth Metal album (if I didn't know any better). In which case I'd think the post was informative.

So, maybe there should be a little context. If the music you're listening to affects you more than white noise, it is worth a few passionate, informative sentences. Also, if there is a particular track that you find persuasive, list it.

@ Black Jacque- well, it's the (third now?) "What are you listening to right now?" thread, so most people post just what the name implies. It's not very different in that sense from the Shift threads or Free Association threads. I don't think it was ever meant to be a place to review records, although it's certainly interesting to read too (but that's what I go to places like Pitchfork for).

There's a Music Talk thread floating around that is where most of our actual discourse on what we're listening to occurs.

I was under the impression it was just a "Hey, this is what I am listening to right this second in time even though time is fluid so do with it what you want" kind of dealie. Eh?
