I have tried googling this, but it is hard when I don't know what it's called or if it exists!

I have just moved to a flat with no internet, and have heard that you can get some sort of satellite internet connection thing, so you don't need a router or landline? Like a mobile gets internet, I suppose, only for a computer!

Can it be done? How can it be done? What is it called? Eek

I think you're talking about WiMax. It sounds expensive though.

Here's an overview of different connection options.

It sounds like one of the wireless internet thingies that look like a flash drive that you plug into your computer. Maybe? A lot of cellphone companies carry them.

Like this thingy!

Mobile broadband. The mobile phone company gives you a USB stick that is basically a mobile phone.

Here's Vodafone's

As for WiMax, I think you are limited to where it has already been installed, like in certain Départements in France.

I think that Gaiman has talked about satellite internet on his blog already. I suppose it is rather expensive.

The G+ key seems to be the most universal option, I'm guessing. But there too, you have to be able to connect to the 3G network.

Good Luck!

I've used one of the cellphone company ones a few times in a borrowed laptop -- it works wonders. If you have a cellphone, check with your provider first to see if they offer it -- you might be able to do a bundle.

eta: And it is kind of expensive.

I have one mobile broadband I'm looking at by 3, but I'll pop into my current phone provider on the way and ask if they do one too.

The 3 one is £30 p/m for 15GB download limit. As it's 15 or 7, I think I'm going to need the 15.

Over here there is a service called ClearWire, where the modem is a receiver of satellite signal rather than plugged into cable or phone lines. I'm sure there are companies doing the same thing in other places.

I totally have mobile internets now! £15, 15GB downloads! And I got a better phone contract with a new phone for the same money!

You are all wonderful, and also I am wonderful, and also 3 are wonderful.
