Really? Why?

I'm quite sad at his passing.

That's shocking, 58 years old. I actually liked him.

Royko, can we still be friends?

It shocked me.

He seemed to really love what he did and I always thought he was fair to people.

agreed. I thought he was pretty reasonable in interviews and election coverage. He asked tough questions but I thought he was pretty fair and unbiased. He's a friendly face that I'll miss.

Oh, I don't want to get into a whole big thing. The man just died, and died relatively young, and I wouldn't wish that on anybody. But I wasn't a fan of his brand of journalism. I think he was part of the small cabal of media Elite who get to decide what's "serious" and "worthy of discussion" and what isn't, and often the line between the two is as arbitrarily chosen as who the cool kids are in high school. I found his social chumminess with his subjects troubling, his practice of keeping all conversations off the record unless otherwise specified indefensible, and his political analysis banal. And if that's not enough, the fact that his show was Dick Cheney's favorite avenue for "controlling the message" is damning enough.

Russert will be much missed here in New Hampshire. Part of the reason he was chummy with the candidates is that he was chummy with EVERYbody, and not in that annoying, celebrity kind of way.

He was known around here for going to local, privately owned restaurants every night he could and mentioned them to other people on the campaign trail, part of a conscious effort to make sure that if New Hampshire was going to bear the burden of many idiot journalists and politicos that it ought to at least get its fair share of the profit.

Oh, that's awful. If I read the report right, there was also a baby in the house?

The one I posted kind of strengthened my resolve. Ex made suicide threats over New Year, so since then hasn't had unsupervised access. Sometimes I think I'm being over-melodramatic and overprotective, and sometimes (like today) I think, no, I'm not. (And it hasn't lessened the time ex has spent with kidlet. Ex has done that all by himself.)

:hugs: Yeah, an 18 month old in the house too.

Maybe the ex is being melodramatic, but who can take the chance?

...and yeah- he did the whole reduction in visitation himself. Have you warned the court about the suicide threat?

Hasn't gone to court - this is all DIY. If I went through official channels, then it would cost me a lot of money I don't have, plus any maintenance payment order made would by statute be even less than I'm getting at the moment. Also, most court arguments here are between one parent who is trying to restrict access by the other parent to their child, whereas I'm trying to get ex to turn up, it's a bit of a different thing.

I did call various agencies - NSPCC, etc - for advice on this, and they all said that if I had any doubt at all, not to allow unsupervised access.

:nods:

I have to go file papers to "impugne" his income. The child support reduction due to his layoff wasn't meant to help finance an extended vacation, and he's been living rent-free with no sign of looking for work, while i have....3 jobs.

yeah

Isn't that practically a requirement, every ten pages or so?

(And GRRRR for useless EB on extended holiday while you slog your guts out...)
