The Wye Oak, the largest tree of it's kind in the United States, was felled by a thunderstorm last week.

Producer Herman Cohen Dies

Reuters

LOS ANGELES (June 9) - Producer Herman Cohen, who invented the teenage fright flick and launched Michael Landon's film career with ''I Was a Teenage Werewolf,'' has died of throat cancer in Los Angeles at age 74, a hospital spokeswoman said Sunday.

Cohen died on June 2 at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

''Werewolf,'' starring Landon as an affable teen transformed into a hairy horror by a diabolical hypnotist, became a cult classic after its release in 1957 and confirmed Cohen's conclusion that teenagers were movie tastemakers.

Made for less than $100,000, ''Werewolf'' grossed more than $2 million. The success inspired Cohen to do six more horror films in which hapless teenagers were terrorized by evil adults.

''I have always felt that most teenagers think that adults -- their parents, or their teacher, anyone who was older and who had authority -- were culprits in their lives,'' Cohen said in a 1991 interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Through his cult horror films, which included ''I Was a Teenage Frankenstein'' and ''How to Make a Monster,'' Cohen put American International Pictures on the map and established himself as the ''king of the drive-in horror movie,'' film historian Tom Weaver told the Times.

Cohen co-wrote many of his films, naming many characters after family members and friends and including cameos for himself, in the manner of Alfred Hitchcock.

The horror genre was a departure from Cohen's earlier work in the 1950s in mainstream films such as ''Crime of Passion,'' starring Barbara Stanwyck.

The Detroit native began his association with motion pictures at 12, as an assistant to a movie theater janitor. He traded his services for free movie passes for himself and his family, the Times reported.

After serving in the Army, Cohen landed a sales job at the Detroit offices of Columbia Pictures.

He moved to Hollywood to work in Columbia's publicity department. In 1951, he earned his first screen credit as assistant producer of ''Bride of the Gorilla.''

Cohen stopped producing movies in the 1970s. He is survived by a brother and sister.

No one famous, but I feel he'd like be remembered here.

A friend of mine from a consider time ago finally succeeded (his third attempt in 15 years) in taking his own life yesterday afternoon. His wife telephoned me this morning at work.

I felt like Horselover Fat in Phil Dick's novel "VALIS". Not so surprised that he finally did it. Just a surprise when it actually occurred. He always took a sick delight in having been named "death" (in German). The first time he tried it, he od'd on somepills and was wearing a Judge Dredd t-shirt: "You Have Been Judged And The Sentence Is Death".

At least I can picture him walking off into the shadows of the Sunless Lands, hand in hand with Death. That gives me a silly happiness underneath the sadness of missing my friend.

Been a bad week so far. Have to go listen to "Fade To Black" now. One of his favorites...

I don't really care about the deaths of famous people, I care about the deaths of people who matter, and this guy mattered to you. I don't know him, so I can't say I'll miss him, but I'm sorry for the loss. If you feel the need to rant and rave about the unfairness of the universe or have deep, introspective thoughts about the unknown and everything after, I'm an e-mail away, and we're a topic away.

I couldn't think of the right thing to say, Dweller, but I think you said it all. We maybe be faceless names, but you know we'll be here for ya, should you need the outlet.

Jaer
knows the pain of loss. Knows it very, very well.

Thank you Dweller. Your thoughts are most appreciated. I am sad at never being able to see him again, but, afterall, he made his thoughts on living quite clear over the years.

I feel much sorrow for his wife and daughters.

It's been a rough week. But I'm still breathing, and that's the best blessing of them all.

And I'm sure Tod would have said something absolutely silly as a come on line to Death. So Thank you, Neil, for allowing us that humor in such tragedy.

EDIT:
And thank you jaer. I just noticed your reply as well.

And to think, I was just feeling sort of left out of our Gaiman family... smile
