I was just about to post this one.

I'd like to be the first to start a conspiracy theory about this "suicide", but I've been beaten to the punch on that as well.

*Of course* the Metallicrap & RIAA's hitmen got him.

Artist. SF covers, fantasy covers, western covers, mystery covers, abstracts, impressionists, game cards, horseshoe crab masks... He painted more covers for F&SF magazine than any other single artist. Piers Anthony book covers. Gene Wolfe book covers. Lord Valentine's Castle and other Robert Silverberg book covers. That amazing set of covers for the Avon printings of Roger Zelazny's Amber series and others.

He was my artist GoH at Boskone 34 (1997). Somewhere amongst the phone conversations (and getting completely toasted on the patio one night with then-wife Gail at the 1996 Worldcon while Ron poured for and laughed at both of us and we talked about nothing and everything...) we came to be friends. He painted a marvelous, evocative cover for NESFA Press's John M. Ford collection, released at that Boskone; that painting, and two more of his, hang in my home.

We didn't talk often, but always with laughter. I'll miss the laughter, and the conversations, and watching him bounce around at conventions, and driving us all crazy 'cause he couldn't keep track of art show paperwork for love nor money.

He was a sweet, brilliant man, and I'll miss him.

That is so weird since his character on Passions died on Monday (the episode would have been shot at least a week beforehand).

Michael Houser, the lead guitarist with Widespread Panic. He had cancer. Not a good year to be a rock musician, it seems. He was only 40...

Katrin Cartlidge died a few days ago. She was only 41 years old. frown She was one of my favorite actresses.

She did stunning work with directors like Lars Von Trier ("Breaking The Waves") and Mike Leigh ("Naked" and "Career Girls") Recent roles included playing a pristitute in "From Hell" and a role in Kathryn Bigelow's "Weight of Water".

Obituary from the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,3604,788482,00.html

Excerpt:

"...As a result of her instinctive good taste, determination to recognise quality over hype, and belief in the process of cinema as well as the product, her opinion was constantly sought; she was asked to be on the jury of film festivals, and asked for advice by first-time directors. Even hardened producers would seek her out for her take on the viability of a project. She was unafraid of saying what she believed in, of making herself heard in an art form that too often - and she believed to its detriment - was cued by money and celebrity. Her interest was in the redemptive power of art and her own art was inspired by a knowledge of sculptors, poets, and musicians, as well as movie-makers."

I had forgotten about this thread.

Add my dad to the list (http://www.neilgaimanboard.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=733605825&f=588609765&m=3256078611). He died on September 12. He was 59.

He wasn't famous, so he probably doesn't fit in with the rest of the list, but he was a damned good father.

September 12 would have been my brother's twenty-third birthday. He died on June 13.

I am sorry man. It is so hard to lose someone.

Not a new death by any means, but today is the 22nd anniversary of John Bonham's death (he was Led Zeppelin's drummer). So I'd just like to send him a little love today.
And also love to everyone who has lost anyone recently or long ago...
Peace,
Elizabeth
