My cousin Tom passed away last night. He battled lukemia for years but it turns out he also had lung cancer, which wasn't discovered til this year. Even though he was already stage 4, he still tried to battle it, but lost. I hope he's at peace (living with fluid-filled lungs can't be fun) but I feel really bad for his wife and my dad. Tom was the closest thing to a best friend my dad had, and after the past year we've had with Ray's dad's health problems and Tom's (both in their 50's, like my dad) I'm afraid he's going to start waiting for "his turn". Condolences, sweets... having a family member with cancer is very difficult to deal with. (been there, several times, don't want to go there again) Glad he was at least able to go down fighting... let that fighting spirit be with you all.. let his bravery support you in this time of grief and be heartened that at least he is no longer in pain... I know such words mean little when you hurt so much, but know that they come from folk who would love to take the pain away if they could...
.. something my family does when one of us goes down due to cancer... we ask those wanting to send gifts instead send donations to the American Cancer Society or some other cancer-related charity in the name of the departed... my aunt donated her body to cancer research... they buried her remains not too long ago on the family plot in Texas...

my gran died about 10 days ago.

Funeral yesterday. just by coincidence, this two week period was the first time in an absolute age that the whole family was in the country at the same time.

good turn out for the funeral, and when we were leaving, my grandfather stood up and said...

"i had so dreaded this day, but in the end i have to say i rather enjoyed it." because we were all there, and we're a good bunch. but what a wonderful thing to be able to say about the day you bury your wife.

66 years, they were married. oof.
but it was a celebration of life, rather than a lament for her death.

she died peacefully, in her sleep. So thanks for the memories, and sleep tight, grammy.

All my support and condolensces to you and your family, sweets.

Your grandfather sounds like an absolute gem of a man. I'm sure he cherished your gran as much as she did him.
