Its been a horrid few months generally, but I'm suprised we let the passing of Joe Kubert on August 12th go unmarked.

RIP Joe, comics have lost a great one, and thoughts to your family.

I'll be honest, they're coming so thick and fast these days that I'm sort of numb to it.

Rev. Moon has passed away.

A memorial service for him, as well as 100 followers expected to kill themselves in the coming days, is scheduled for next Sunday.

i am actually devastated by the news about Michael Clarke Duncan.

ridiculous, really, over the death of a man I was never going to meet, never going to know. but i'm feeling torn to bits by the news. Frown

Limertilly: A pagan deity forgotten by man and therefore banished to the realms of memory and darkness now remembered by a young girl in downtown L.A. in the form of a dream and therefore freed to reap your revenge on the people who discarded you, thereby forcing said girl to learn to use her innate yet awesome powers as a soothsayer to gather forces of the Earth to defy you and once more banish you to your cold, cold prisoooooon

It's so unexpected. He was larger than life in more than the obvious way.

I know nothing about any of it (EVE), but I read every word of that. Interesting. Sad, but fascinating how the internet creates real space for people to form real relationships that get impacted by the real world. I always hate the term real world, because our virtual world is real, it's a part of the world, just as EVE loses friends like Vile Rat and WE lose friends like Joe. I'm way out on a tangent here, but this really struck me for some reason.

Mittani said: It seems kind of trivial to praise a husband, father, and overall badass for his skills in an internet spaceship game but that's how most of us know him, so there you go.

I get what he's saying, to some it might be trivial, but we all speak from our perspective. For him and so many others (just as for us here at the WE) the relationships in-game were real, Vile Rat's influence on the players and the world they inhabited were real, even if they weren't in meatspace. And then for some those relationships transcended the game and entered meatspace, and it doesn't make it more "real", it just makes it more personal.

Anyhoo, sorry for the tangent.

Antonio Garcia.

My grandfather has fought all sorts of medical ailments for the last few years, from kidney failure to diabetes to cancer. He's been in and out of the hospital more times than I can count, but after the first few scares I just always assumed he would come home again. He passed away last night at the hospital in Merrill, WI. My grandma was there at his side when it happened.

Between the dialysis and the insulin injections and diabetes-related amputations he was in a lot of pain, but he never complained. He had the best chuckle, and never stopped making jokes.

I'll always remember the nights we used to sit together on the front porch swing listening to thunder or watching bats come out at dusk. Sometimes he would tell me stories about growing up in Texas, living in a house with a tin roof and listening to the rain or the wild dogs at night. Sometimes we would sit together in the living room and watch old reruns of Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie. He used to make me chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, and once spent an afternoon shoveling snow against the porch to build a ramp so I could go sledding.

I love you Grandpa, I'm glad you're at peace now.

You are a Bookholder. To prompt, or...LINE! (not to prompt) --not to prompt. That is the question. Whether t'is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of a bad memory, or to take arms against a sea of textual deviations, and...LINE! (by opposing) --by opposing them...LINE! (end) --end...LINE! (them) --end them...LINE! (to prompt, to correct; no more; and by a correction to say we end the heart-ache of a really terrible performance) You didn't have to give me the whole thing! I know it!

Thank you so much. I'm sad he's gone, but at the same time it's almost a relief knowing that he's not in pain anymore. The memorial service will be in November when everyone was already planning on flying to Wisconsin for another family event.

Love you guys. Smile
