I'm actually kind of relieved by this one, tbqh. Last fall, he did an interview with Terry Gross, in which he basically broke down crying about everyone he had lost. He was sad, alone, and had nothing left to look forward to but death. It was clear that he was ready for it, and felt there was nothing else worth sticking around for.

This Pig Wants To Party: Maurice Sendak's Latest : NPR

It's... pretty goddamned powerful. I remember getting really choked up just listening to it in my car. I... can't even bring myself to listen to it again right now. Just reading the excerpts, I hear his voice - hear him struggling not to cry into the phone.

quote:
"I have nothing now but praise for my life. I'm not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can't stop them. They leave me and I love them more. ... What I dread is the isolation. ... There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready."

Oh goodness, I hadn't heard that interview before. Tears. I hope right now he is seeing his brother, his partner, and all the people he missed so much.

You are a Bookholder. To prompt, or...LINE! (not to prompt) --not to prompt. That is the question. Whether t'is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of a bad memory, or to take arms against a sea of textual deviations, and...LINE! (by opposing) --by opposing them...LINE! (end) --end...LINE! (them) --end them...LINE! (to prompt, to correct; no more; and by a correction to say we end the heart-ache of a really terrible performance) You didn't have to give me the whole thing! I know it!

That's really heartbreaking. I hope he's found some peace and has been reunited with those he loved.

RIP

I know. (I couldn't believe he was 70, either.) I kind of like that he went peacefully, right after doing a gig.

70 isn't that much older than I am. That's one reason things like this are starting to bother me more than they used to.

I'm not sure which is sadder, the fact that he's passed on, or the fact that most of you probably wouldn't have known if I didn't mention it.

We need a new outlook.
Sit in your rocking chair with address book and pen in hand, saying "beat him", "beat her", "beat them", and cross them out as you go.
While you giggle insanely to yourself.
I know it wouldn't really help but.

RIP Maurice Sendak. I don't think I want to listen to the interview any day, let alone today, being the 2nd anniversary of my sister's passing Frown
and RIP your old musicians Lester
and RIP all my old mum and dad's friends who seem to be popping like bubbles this year
