I think she got pretty sick a few years ago. But she was really pretty young when they did the show - even though she played the oldest one.

Simon Dean, who I used to work with, and still kept in contact with, was stabbed on Sunday night in Streatham. The latest of far too many people killed in London this year.

He was a brilliant bloke, very generous and funny and had an amazing work ethic.

I really don't know how we get back from where we are now. I don't understand what is happening to my country and I don't know how to stop it.

Oh Psi, I'm so sorry. I agree, this is just a crazy situation that society is in right now, and no one seems to know what to do.

Limertilly: A pagan deity forgotten by man and therefore banished to the realms of memory and darkness now remembered by a young girl in downtown L.A. in the form of a dream and therefore freed to reap your revenge on the people who discarded you, thereby forcing said girl to learn to use her innate yet awesome powers as a soothsayer to gather forces of the Earth to defy you and once more banish you to your cold, cold prisoooooon

Psi, that's awful - for him; for you as his friend; for all his friends and family; and indeed for all of who live in and love London, that it should come to this.

As for how to stop it - do what you are doing, which is being a good, brave and honourable person.

(Oh, and I still tell kids to pick up litter, and so on - what's the alternative?)

But I'm not brave, I wouldn't go to a place where they might be the slightest risk and I would never challenge an adult who was doing something they shouldn't, it's just too risky.

The one thing I could do, which is to bring up a child the right way to balance out all the awful ones, I haven't had the chance to do, and given that I am not brave enough to protect a woman, I can see why that has happened.

You are a Leprechaun. I'm not even sure what you are. Whiskey-soaked reports from your baffling Isle of Ire raise more questions than they answer. Are you a dwarf? Where's your pickax? If you're an elf, why don't you cobble? You'd think with all your gold, you could invest in some land, perhaps a title, and improve your station. Instead, you hide it in meteorologically-determined locations. You're getting killed on inflation, little friend!

I don't know. I don't know where we're going and why we're going there. And you're right, you can't do anything much to change the tide, not you personally.

You can only go on being a decent human being. There are so many around who are not. Be the person people will look at and say "he's the guy we can depend on, he's the guy who would never treat someone badly, who is fair and gentlemanly and possesses all those virtues that are slowly going missing."

Don't give up, don't stop caring. What makes society a better place is people being better people, and the only thing you can do, being neither superhuman nor heroic nor a public figure, is to be a good person.

It *counts*.

Because every person who manages to live life as a decent human being lets others go on believing that it is possible, it is important, and it is worth being one themselves.

Oh, Psi, Babylon has it absolutely right, except I disagree with her about one nuance. You DO make a difference - I sometimes suspect you might get a bit fed up of being labelled a "gentleman", but you are, and just by example that helps, it really does. Every person who behaves well - and you behave better than most, I think - helps to create the conditions whereby that standard of behaviour can be seem as the norm, or at the very least something to aspire to.

And maybe you have never been in circumstances where you needed to ride in protect somebody (man, woman or child), but I can't imagine for a second that you wouldn't, if it was necessary. I'm reminded of something that marvinmarymac wrote on the news thread about the terrorist trick of two bombs in quick succession: people do know there's a risk, but they flock to help anyway.

(And the 'gentleman' thing has got nothing to do with dress sense or class, but demeanor. We were on the tube yesterday and there was a man about your age, maybe a little older, also dressed very well. But he had a permanent sneer on his face and was digging in his ear and flicking the wax across the tube compartment. So. y'know, the resemblence ended right there.)

None of which helps much with the grief over the loss of your friend, or any other decent human being, but it's there.

*hugs*
