Da List has been finalized!!! Thanks everyone for your suggestions! The ones I didn't take directly still influenced most of the songs I chose...

quote:
Alabama Playlist:
Ramble On- Led Zeppelin (inspired by Apathy's suggestion of Ramblin' Man)
Natural Blues- Moby
Southern Man- Neil Young (thanks, robot! I love that song)
A Little Less Conversation- Elvis (thank you, Mattvid. Thankyouverymuch.)
Alabama Song- The Doors (Danke sehr, Mattvid...know why I thanked you auf Deutsch?)
Where Did You Sleep Last Night- Nirvana (Leadbelly's on the other playlist)
Sweet Home Alabama- Bama Boyz (cuz..well...I just couldn't bring myself to do the obvious version)
Freebird- Vitamin String Quartet (Rock on, Apathy.)
Stars Fell on Alabama- Billie Holiday (More Apathetic influences--I heart Willie, but if I have an opportunity to have Billie on a playlist, I'll take it)
Space Oddity- David Bowie (Huntsville! Home of Space Camp! Like the segue from "Stars" to Space"? Genius!)
Wanderlust King- Gogol Bordello (because no campin' trip would be complete without gypsy punk)
Stuart- Dead Milkmen (cuz you have to have at least one reference to trailer parks when traveling to Alabama)
Tommy the Cat- Primus (I included this because TLOML likes "drive fast" music, and Jerry Was A Racecar Driver was on the last camping trip mix)
Hypnotize- System of a Down (more "drive fast" music for TLOML...it's one of his favorite songs)
Jesus Built My Hotrod- Ministry (DRIVE. FAST.)

Kentucky Playlist:
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?- Leadbelly (nice book end w/ Nirvana's cover)
Urge for Going- Joni Mitchell (I need at least one song to sing pretty to.)
Gravel Road- Clutch (TLOML's favorite band, and we'll be...on the road)
Crossroads- Cream (figured it was appropos, being that we'll be travelling from Alabama to Kentucky)
My Old Kentucky Home- Kentucky Thunder (an acapella African sounding thing.)
Long Ride Home- Patty Griffin (more pretty girl music for moi)
Down By The River- cover by Jill Sobule (we'll be camping next to the Green River)
Faithfully- Journey (because every roadtrip needs a power ballad.)
Underground- Tom Waits (because we'll be doing a 6 hour extreme caving adventure at Mammoth Cave)
No Ceiling- Eddie Vedder (from the Into the Wild soundtrack)
The Wanderlust- Flogging Molly (inspired by SP's suggestion of I wanna Be in the Cavalry...but more road-trippy)
Sorrow- Bad Religion (just because I really like that song and for some reason my playlist has lots of Jesus references)
Highway 101- Social Distortion (I love it when I can find road songs and punk songs rolled into one...also ispired by Depeche Mode's Route 66, which we had on our last camping mix)
Personal Jesus- Marylin Manson (just cuz it's a good "lets git it on in da tent...for Jesus!" song)
Radar Love- Ministry (
RAWK.
)

...upon reviewing the lyrics of my playlists, there are two unintended themes that have surfaced:

1) Jesus
2) The Murder of Unfaithful Lovers

...must be a Southern Thang.

There is a serious lack of bluegrass on that playlist, for a southern-themed mix...

 Just sayin'.

He began to think of people in a new light; how everyone's just little more than that frightened, fragile brain stem, surrounded by meat and physics, too terrified to recognize the sum of their parts, insulated in the shells of their skulls and lower-middle-class houses, afraid of change, afraid of decisions, afraid of pain, stuck in traffic, listening to terrible music.

My last mix had a ton of bluegrassy-ness, since we were headed for the Blue Ridge Mtns.

This time I was looking more for a Delta Blues-y sound.

I just realized there is ONE song missing from these Songs of the South:

Dueling Banjos.

Aaaand...added to the Alabama playlist.

I would add one more song:

"Honeysuckle Blue" by Drivin 'n' Cryin

And how could the list be complete without a song by Alabama? I recommend "Song of the South"

What? No Abba? No Hedwig soundtrack? No Erasure? No Handbag House tunes? Gloria Gaynor? Tegan and Sara?

You're heading into the New South! With a Yeehaw and a fabulous hair do!

Alrighty...new playlist.

Making a mix CD as an opening night gift to my castmates. I'd like to dedicate a song to each of their characters. Since it's Into the Woods, which is based on Grimms Fairy Tales, you all are probably familiar with these (with the exception of the Baker and Baker's Wife):

Cinderella
Jack (of Beanstalk fame)
Jack's Mother
Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red's Granny
Wolf
Rapunzel
Witch
Cinderella's Step-Family
Cinderella's Prince
Prince's Steward
Rapunzel's Prince
Giant('s Wife)
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Baker
Baker's Wife
Narrator

So...any ideas on which songs might be appropos for each character? I already have some ideas but I'd love to see what ya'll come up with!

Lan, that is awesome. I can only think of one right now - Potter's Field by Tom Waits for the Wolf. Because Tom Waits is very growly, and it's got a great switchblade reference.

For Cinderella, the songs that came immediately to mind were Glass Slipper by the Dresden Dolls ( lyrics), which is a great song but might not send a great message to the recipient (depends on her personality, I guess), and By the Way that They Dance by Jump, Little Children ( lyrics), which I always associated with Cinderella, but is a much looser connection.

EDIT/NOTE: I'm mostly thinking of the traditional Cinderella, here, though I think the second option fits fairly well for the Sondheim version - if only because I tend to assume that if "everyone knows" something, it isn't really true.

For the narrator, I googled around and found Storyteller by French "symphonic power/speed metal" band Fairyland (no idea what they sound like - I just google them, fellas Wink ).

quote:
Hear me I'm the story teller
of knights and warriors I know many tales
"Their joyces and cries"
Around the fire, in the redening light
"I'll sing my song"
and tell everyone here
"About true heroes"
you'll know finally
"The end of this tale"

In the evening when the sun is down
"In the last hour of day"
I'll entertain the ones wishfull to hear
"These medieval tales"
And then in their sleeps, they'll remember days
"When lived the kings"
in their heroic times
"No one was in pain"
peace and happiness
"Rulled over the land

Far on the hills in the silence of dreams
the heart of all heroes will
sing in the name of our
Kingdom of gold magic lands of our hold
the wise and the faithfull could live there
and fullfill their quest of majesty

And then when the story will be over
"And when the fire burns out"
I will make my trip to farther lands
"To keep the legend alive"
maybe you'll forget me, but you never will
"Forget my tales
for your destinies
"Are tied to these legends
what was happening
"Will happen again"

Far on the hills in the silence of dreams
the heart of all heroes will
sing in the name of our
Kingdom of gold magic lands of our hold
the wise and the faithfull could live there
and fullfill their quest in their eternal majesty

Well thanks for your input, you lovely people! My play list is a bit more pop-oriented and literal than I would usually do, but it's a pop-oriented group of musical theatre types who like nothing better than have an excuse to sing loudly and dance around.

So, here's what I came up with:

Into the Woods: The Mixtape

1)Cinderella: I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
2)Stepmother & Father: Family- Zach Gill & Jack Johnson
3)Florinda & Lucinda: I Can See Clearly Now- Johnny Nash (cuz in the play the stepsisters get their eyes pecked out by birds. Ha!)
4)Cinderella’s Prince: When Doves Cry- Prince
5)Jack: Jumpin’ Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
6)Jack’s Mom: Mother - Christina Aquilera (covering John Lennon)
7)Milky White: (Jack's Cow) Faithfully- Journey
8)Baker: Baker: Baker- Tori Amos
9)Baker’s Wife: Criminal- Fiona Apple (if you know the play, you'll understand why I picked that'un)
10)Witch: Witchy Woman- The Eagles
11)Little Red: Li’l Red Ridinghood- Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs
12)Wolf: Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
13)Granny: Look at Granny Run Run- Grand Funk Railroad
14)Steward: Master and Servant- Depech Mode
15)Rapunzel: Hair- Cast of Hair
16)Rapunzel’s Prince: Kiss- Prince & The Revolution
17)Mysterious Man: Father of Mine- Everclear
18)Cinderella’s Mom: Always Be My Baby- David Cook (covering Mariah Carey)
19)Giant: Take a Giant Step- The Monkees
20)Snow White & Sleeping Beauty: A Sorta Fairy Tale- Tori Amos

ooh, I thought of those! but I don't know the play, so I didn't want to embarrass myself. Big Grin

oh, and for the Narrator...you should use "Storybook Love" from The Princess Bride soundtrack! (again, I reeeeally don't know the play, so my apologies if it's woefully out-of-place.)

Not out of place at all! You don't really have to know the play to make suggestions...after all, it's based on all the fairy tales...

(But sadly, I've started burning CDs, so no bonus tracks. I love your suggestion though!)
