for those who aren't facebook friends, or who for whatever reason haven't seen the updates over there or on twitter:

I had my operation last monday, 14th January 2013.

It didn't go so well. As soon as the surgeon opened me up, he could see that it wasn't going to go well, but he gave it a shot. When he started trying to excise the fibroid, it all just started bleeding.

And kept bleeding, and bleeding, and bleeding.

When I'd lost 6 litres of blood, he and the anaesthetist had to reassess, because it was clear that it wasn't going to stop bleeding.

So he clamped off the blood supply to my uterus, and they started giving me 6 units of blood, then left my body to catch up with itself..

When he came back to me, he carried out a sub total hysterectomy. This means that I still have my ovaries, and my cervix, and my fallopian tubes, but everything else is gone.

The fibroid had a volume of over 4.5 litres, and was apparently hyper-vascularised, which is probably why it had grown so very very much in the last 18 months.

So anyway. I survived. I'm still here. and i have to learn to deal with the fact that i will never carry my own baby. i might have a child, still. but i will never be pregnant. i don't really know how to deal with it, but i'm sure i will. i've begun by being as positive as i can, and i intend to keep that way, but oh. that is quite a thing to deal with.

Any support, vibes and love you can send my way will not go unappreciated.

a good thing that has come out of this:

i have lost, in the last 3 months or so, about 40lbs. (why doesn't it SHOW, is what i want to know!)

i have had a massive shift in my self-image and self-worth based on how many people have told me how loved i am. it's hard to avoid accepting it in such quantities and such circumstances

i never ever ever have to have another horrible, messy, bloody, painful, must-wear-black-today-just-in-case period.

Oh, Limer, I'm so very sorry. *hugs*

I think you know that I've been through something very similar, & I know it's a big thing to come to terms with - it's probably been one of the most difficult things for me so far. If you ever want to talk, just let me know. (If not, I'll send vibes for you to get through this as well as possible.)

For now, I'll just say how impressed I am with how positive you already are about the whole thing, & you're right: Periods are definitely not one of the things I miss, & not having them means planning fun things is SO much easier. I keep forcing myself to look at the positive side, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to find many more good things in the future.

thanks, Cass. i'd be very glad to talk with you, i'm trying to find a group that i can join, as i suspect that however positive i sound right now, there will be days, weeks, months even where i can't even begin to sound vaguely neutral.

i don't know if you already have my gmail chat address, but it's dizzyflirt at gmail dot com - i'm around a LOT at the moment, although to be fair, mostly in bed. but my phone is very clever and can let me chat from bed. wahey.

everyone, i really am very glad for the support - it's one of the things i've always loved so much about this board.

I've also seen this on facebook, but wish to add further:
~HUGS~

Everyone is glad you're still here: you are an excellent person in yourself, whether you become a parent or not.

I can't pretend to understand everything you're going through, but there is one thing I can say from experience that might help:

Being a good parent has nothing to do with shared DNA.

Plus if you did end up adopting, that's one less person who might otherwise have never had a family. So that could be another good thing.
