Did you know there's a porn star named Alaura who starred in Deep Inside Dirty Debutantes #46? Are you her? *waggles eyebrows*

Um...no. I didn't discover that until I made the mistake of doing a Google image search for "Alaura" while looking for an avatar. If you want to do the same, be warned: there might be pink bits.

So, if you're not a porn star, why the name?

Well, Alaura's a conglomeration of my first and middle name..I've been using it in stories that I've written since childhood. I guess I see the name as the version of me that I want to be. My full user name is Alaura Ephemera-- and "Ephemera" is one of my favorite words-- it refers to a short-lived, fleeting, momentary thing. In some cases it refers to printed things that are meant to be discarded, such as advertisments, band posters, postcards and ticket stubs (which I think are wonderful things that capture the zeitgeist of a time). I think it describes the experience one has in Theatre.

Theatre, huh?

Yep. I've been performing since I was five years old. It's kinda in my blood.

So do you want to be a Broadway or Movie Star (tm)?

Nuh-uh. Maybe when I was 10 I did, but I've been doing it long enough that I don't need that kind of validation. I got my Master's in theatre with a focus on creating original works-- my plan was to teach and create my own theatre company. So far, I've taught at a couple differnt colleges and have been a member of a quite a few up-and-coming theatre companies. At the same time, I've discovered that there actually is more to life than theatre.

Like what?

Like TLOML.

TLOM-wha?

The Love of My Life.

That's cute. And kinda sickening.

Well...yeah. But it's true. He is. (TLOML, not sickening). Meeting him has opened up so many more possibilities for my life than I was aware of, being solely focused on theatre for so long.

So he's the reason you're in Toledo instead of living the life of a starving actress/waitress in New York or Chicago or somewhere that actually has an arts world?

Part of it. But I should point out that helping to build an arts world in Toledo would be way more fulfilling to me that just blending into an already-established one. Also, I'm lucky enough to love my day job, and I work for a company that allows me to work anywhere in the States. His company just happened to transfer him to this part of the world for now.

If you like him so much, why don't you marry him?

*sigh* Good question. There's no doubt in my mind I will, I'm just waiting for a proposal.

Why don't you propose to him?

Because apparently he has a very elaborately-plotted surprise proposal in mind, and I would definitely screw up the plans if I did that.

ETA: Since this FAQ was created, I am happy to report that TLOML answered the question of "If you like her so much, why don't you marry her?" with "Fine! I will!" and we did. And the proposal was awesome. And we're now the hell outta Toledo, which is a very depressing place to live. Big Grin

Do you really think you're a goddess?

No, but the Board makes me feel like one.

How did you end up here?

I followed the path of the moon and ended up in the Dreaming. In other words, I was way into Sandman, did some googling, discovered Neil's journal, and hitched a ride to the message board.

Why do you stay?

Well, like I said, the Board makes me feel like a goddess. Almost every member is generous of spirit, warm, friendly, and incredibly silly. Plus, I've made quite a few "in-person" friends thanks to The World's End.

So, fess up...you're really that porn star Alaura, aren't you?

No, I'm really not.

But would you do a nude scene?

*facepalm*

So, Nel Gurgle, that's an odd name. Why did you pick that?

Well originally I joined the board as Nelthita, a misspelling of an impetuous girl rabbit from one of my childhood favorite books Watership Down. But as the board is wont to do we it was quickly shortened to Nel. Then one day Neil was blogging about how his daughter thought his signature looked like it said Nel Gurgle instead of Neil Gaiman.

I snagged it and it's been me ever since.

How did you find your way to this board?

I used to read Neil's blog everyday at work, he mentioned this Sandman Convention and I thought it sounded sooooooo cool, but I had no one to go with. Long story short I went and joined the board just before I left.

What on earth keeps you here?

Well mostly...entertainment. Ok it USED to be entertainment and turned into many many IM and RL friendships. Love the play of silly and wit and compassion that abounds on the board.

What's with the hugbombs?

Hmm. I think it just amuses me the juxtaposition of violence and affection. Nothing wakes up a sleepy shift like a good hugbomb and all it's shrapnel.

Where are all the ellipses you usually pepper your posts with? Why do you do that anyway?

Well...same as Masque really. Text is such a hard medium to try and infuse with inflection and cadence...I feel the ellipse serves me for the lull in a sentence, a pause, a thought that trails off...

Sure I could use a comma...but it just doesn't feel right in a conversation somehow...

So, what do you do? What is your career?

Current position: Girl Friday

??

*sigh*

Noun 1. girl Friday - a female assistant who has a range of duties
assistant, helper, help, supporter - a person who contributes to the fulfillment of a need or furtherance of an effort or purpose; "my invaluable assistant";

I do everything from planning $100,000 parties to organizing and overseeing product photo shoots to designing marketing pieces and ad layouts to ...well whatever the project du jour happens to be. I'm the girl that gets it done.

But what's this U&P thing you helped found?

Yes. That. The Realm of Unproductivity and Procrastination. Well...because I do so many different things at any one time no one really knows what I'm doing...so I can really put things off if it suits me.

Huh.

Yeah.

So, are you as sexy as your avatar?

Some people might think so.

I think I'm done now

And the reason for the username?
I was looking for a name for my yahoo account, and almost every word in the English language had already been taken. I had Kew magazine on my desk open to an article about beekeeping, titled "Hives of Activity", so I used that. I transferred it to this board, and after a couple of weeks changed it to Hive just for simplicity's sake. I like it and all the connotations it has.

Why are you here?
Me and my big mouth - I registered for the sole purpose of rebutting something someone said on one of the political threads, and everyone was so nice I kept coming back. Then someone made me a welcome thread and it rather bowled me over - such open-heartedness to newbies in a message board full of people who have known each other for a long time is as rubies and pearls.

What's with the av?
It's a picture of the Sultan's Elephant. It is a testament to the joy of doing something for the sheer beauty of the thing.

What on earth have you done to your hair?
I am on a quest to find the perfect ginger hair dye. I suspect I will have to endure quite a lot of pink before I find it. Pink is, admittedly, both age-inappropriate and job-inappropriate, but somehow I find I cannot summon enough energy to care.

Why are you up this late?
Reason #1: Because I am an idiot.
Reason #2: There's so much interesting stuff out there and a substantial amount of it is helpfully on the internet!

Do you like pie? Cheese? Avocados? Lunch?
Oh, yeah, baby. All of them. That's why I'm not including a "How much do you weigh?" question in these FAQs.

Will you ever finish your Project in time to post it?
Yes! Yes! I promisss! Yesssssss!

Have you tried Goldwell? I use an equal mix of 8GB and 8KG. 'tis professional stuff though, so it can only be done in a salon, unless you know a stylist.

Go on, do it.

Name

I'm descended from an Irish cave. No, really. Really, no. It's just one of my names.

Why all the gold stars?

Furious is under the impression that I get awarded a star for performing services to a mod. I am reluctant to shatter his fragile world view. Even though the reason for the stars is obvious. Pretty obvious. And occasionally they get taken away.

Why?

Disliking Ranch Dressing is a dangerous opinion to have around here.

How can you dislike Ranch?

I find it a weak, insipid stream of fat. Sure there maybe other versions out there that are more suited to my palette, but the base versions have not inspired me to search.

Are you likely to lose a star for that.

Most likely. The awarder can be fickle though.

EDT: Yup, they've gone down.

Is that a clown in your avatar?

No, it's Ginger of the Wildhearts. We look somewhat similar at times.

So you're a natural redhead?

I am now.

Why are you here?

Some things I choose not to question, just accept the consequences.

Why all the pictures?

I refuse to allow myself to get bored. So when I'm in a lull, I'll expend my creative energies on trying to make people smile. The drawings seem to do that. If I don't do any for a while, it's because I'm busy.

Busy doing what?

Stalking the shadows, laughing at the innocent.
