rather an interesting video but also contains a link to a petition regarding the addition of the universal declaration of human rights to every passport, which i think is a bloody good idea, actually.

Admirable notion, but I don't know how well it would help to enforce human rights. The Soviet Union had an extensive bill of rights, for example.

That is to say the person in relation to whom, by virtue of the principle of legitimacy, everything in your kingdom is ordered, in whom your people perceive its own nationhood, and by whose presence and dignity the national unity is upheld."

oh, come on. how many people in this country know all that stuff? putting it in a passport would mean that LOADS of people would read it when they were queueing for stuff which needed a passport. *nodnod*

All journeys begin with a single step. Its the people that say "oh, great but it will never work" and sit and do or say nothing that irritate me most.

Apathy is government's greatest enabler.

Eek She is?

There have been many times that, for some reason or another, I've sat and read my passport. I'd appreciate something more interesting to read!

(And why are passport thingies always in French as well as English? For British and American ones, at least. If they could include the Declaration of Human Rights in French then that would be most conducive to my studies.)

I didn't say it would never work. Countries which take them seriously and have an established culture, I agree with it being done. But for countries which have damned awful attitudes to civil rights, this won't make a difference, I believe.

I'm guess I'm just cynical Razz

*facepalm* I knew that was going to happen.

*edit in to DM* Maybe. But maybe the reading of something inspirational will inspire activism in those places that do not have such great records.

Lingua Franca, another widely spread language too.

Maybe the citizens in those countries will go: "Hang on.. I was supposed to have rights?!"

And then have a peaceful revolution and bring about a new age of harmony and equality for all. Could happen. *nods*

If they have a revolt (which rarely happens 'peacefully), they'll likely do it without reading their passports.

And no, I haven't signed - work compy won't accept the link for one thing! Stupid filters...

Oh! I heard a great quote from Benjamin Franklin the other day to this effect, basically predicting the downfall of the US due to corruption and apathy...

but I can't remember what it was...
