Analysis of the way the media has handled the story.

Followed by a depressing bunch of comments which prove no-one is listening to what the writer has to say.

There was an excellent programme on the LHC on BBC 4 earlier in the week. I was surprised to find that most of the researchers rated the chances of finding the Higgs at 90%. Though clearly I have little knowledge on which to base it, my opinion is less, because I just instinctively feel the standard model is too complex and something is going to (or needs to) be found that enables us to simplify it.

Awesome. I'm looking forward to Wednesday too. Even if the pseudo-scientific "black hole" alarmist nut-jobs are right, then at least we'll get a short week.

The headline from this article from the Times is rather fabulous.

Almost makes you sorry there isn't going to be any black hole.

That said, the article does play up the doomsday scenario and kind of pays lip service to the truth.

Exciting! Smile

"The other night I dreamed that King George VI was dead, and that Helen Hardinge had somehow or other got herself proclaimed Queen of England, and that I was detailed to go and tell her that it wouldn't do at all; and when I did this, all she said was, 'You see, I am really Queen Mary,' and I said, 'Oh very well' - words to that effect, and woke up.

Last night I dreamed that Eisenhower came to stay with us, and he insisted on being put to sleep in the dog kennel, with a collar and chain about his neck."

Yes they are Smile

I posted that I the comments made me with the world would be all squished up by a black hole.

Stephen Hawking was on the radio today talking about it. He said there's reactions like this going on in the atmosphere every day, but that if they did get to make one, and it was like he said, he'd get a Nobel prize Big Grin

I can't wait! What time's it getting switched on? I want to make sure I'm next to a radio!

Wicked!

The UK Government's supplied £500m to this project alone, the biggest investment in a single scientific project it's ever done Smile

New / old ant species found!

What baffles me is the name.

quote:
The new ant is named Martialis heureka, which translates roughly to "ant from Mars,"

"Heureka" means ant? Archimedes, upon making his breakthrough discovery, triumphantly shouted: "ANT!" ?
Are they sure?
