I'd want to read the article before believing the statistic quoted - science journalists are lazy bastards. Interesting results, though, even if the numbers turn out to be less dramatic.

They did the study at a disco. I kinda believe the dominant hand, dominant ear theory but I'm not too sure shouting for cigarettes in a disco is the best way to prove it.

Marcus du Satutoy has taken over from Richard Dawkins as as professor for the understanding of science at the University of Oxford,.

He has a large task ahead of him...

quote:
a 1988 survey that asked people if they were interested in science (yes, they were!) and wanted more and better science communication (they certainly did!) and then: does the sun go round the Earth, or does the Earth go round the sun? The next question was: how long does it take? One in three failed the first question. Two out of three failed the second.

Sigh... makes me wonder what they teach in schools, then I remember that they still teach that. People just can't be arsed to remember!

gah thats aweful

but then it doesn't have much to do with what they teach in schools, kids only get a small fraction of knowledge from school.

I'm going to blaim both the media and parents.

You have to get your kids interested in how the world works and not just plonk them in front of the YV/Computer 24/7.

I was lucky I had an interest in things around me and my parents knew answer to questions like what is fog etc.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before but having parents explain false info to their kids at museums cause they couldn't be arsed to read the information panel really pisses me off!

Yes I know that you are stupid but do you have to feed your kids crap, which they will undoubtadly believe as mum/dad when you are a kid are always right.

so, you've went to the effort of taking your kids to the museum - go you - (or was it just to get out of the rain?) and then you do ...

*shakes head again*

teach your child to read?

Dad: Why do we keep bringing him here if he already knows everything?

Mars Rovers are at it again (or still).
Seriously, is there a more fruitful scientific endeavour than the Mars Rovers in the history of science? (Except perhaps Captain Cook's endeavour on the Enveavour).

I love Calvin. And the Mars Rovers. Both triumphs of critical thinking.

Yeah, seriously, very good example of people draining everything out of the opportunity.

I really hope they find an underground ice cavern somewhere. That or some good Marvel-type radiation that will turn us all into mutants and superheroes.

That's rather awesome. And horrifying. I'm just imagining being one of those warriors with a cheap knock-off, charging into your first battle.

That brings up all kinds of amusing implications for my Society for Creative Anachronism activities. "Of course I copied (so-and-so)'s work! Plagarism is Period!"

(No, I'd never do that, but thinking about it is funny to me).

Or, as the scientist quoted said: "That is absolutely gobsmacking."

Important information on decreasing a woman's chances for the various immunological disorders that can occur during pregnancy.

Fathers-to-be, take note, this is very important. I know it's tough, but you've got to do it - for her.
