Sort of science-y - some photos from the 4th

What happens when 1lb. of black powder and wadding is stuffed into a 140-year old metal tube and rapidly oxidized.

(Pls ignore the giant finger at the top of the picture -- clearly not used to the whole cameraphone concept *d'oh!*)

The penultimate shot of the evening resulted in this massive smoke ring floating out over the field, and finally settling in over the bleachers. Alas, the phone refused to get out of gallery mode and this was the only shot that I managed. Still cool, though.

Good times ... ('cause it 'sploded!)

That was posted up in the News thread as well - fascinating idea, though. Now, I'd heard most recently that they were looking at links between deer and pinnipeds as well, but I haven't heard much on that. Makes one wonder if there might be a link between whales and pinnipeds after all.

Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake."

Does anyone else think it's a bad idea for Cyberdyne to design HAL?

The planet Jupiter shows evidence of having being hit by a large object, either a comet or asteroid.

Scientists had plenty of warning of that impact but this latest event came out of the blue.

Researchers say that if the mark really was caused by a comet or asteroid, it should spread out in the coming days in a predictable way with jet streams .

ZOMG RUNFORTEHUNDERGROUNDBUNKERSCARRYTONSOFWATERANDCLEANUNDERWEAR- hey waitmminit, we don't live on Jupiter.

Nevermind.
