Okay, that was harsh. Would you accept 'a crowd P.T. Barnum would love'? Big Grin

I'm not reviewing movies right now (car is dead Frown) but I would have been upset if I paid to see Transformers 2... not that I'm saying that I... uhmmm... STAY AWAY FROM MY LAPTOP! Mad

That sounds like an eloquent comprimise.

Hal, overall, I'd say The Boy's still on to something. I mean, compare Super Friends to JLA or Teen Titans.

Still, the SuperFriends had Judge Smails doing the voiceovers!

I still remember back when I thought the coolest thing ever would be an Inspector Gadget live action movie. Not as any silly comedy, either. In my mind, Inspector Gadget was serious business -- the absolute peak of spy thriller fiction! In my mind, such a movie would have been James Bond meets Indiana Jones crossed with Citizen Kane! Ahh, being a kid.

As grateful as I am for the things my parents introduced me to as a kid, I'm also glad that they gave me a good deal of latitude (often, I think, out of bewilderment) to get into my own stuff, regardless of its quality, because some of the stuff I found really shaped who I am in ways they probably couldn't fully appreciate. And of the things I loved as a child, most of what I took with me into adulthood was the good stuff, or even the good bits of the bad stuff, and most of the crap sort of fell away in my memory, with a few sentimental exceptions.

Also, Teen Titans is supermegaawesome at any age!

ETA: On the other side of the coin, my parents have tried to explain the appeal of Howdy Doody and Ozzie and Harriot to me, with no success.

I wanted to be Ultra Man, not because of the obvious reasons, but because the agency Ultra Man's human form was associated with wore bright blue 3-piece suits and when there was trouble, they unzipped them and they were in their (pre-Power Rangers) orange battle suits!. That was quite nifty.

Oh, I say no, lots n lots. Smile

But, well, my mum didn't let me do things not because I wasn't able or we couldn't afford it, but because she couldn't be bothered or didn't like it.

She didn't like 'cartoons' so I never saw Disney animated movies until I was 18. But she didn't mind Herbie flicks, so I saw *all* of them.

So, I don't want to channel my mother. And I feel like I'm doing just that by saying, oh I think this is crap, so we won't be watching it.

But, unless he really pays attention to release dates (and he did for T2:RotF) and it's not a movie I want to see (like Up) well, then, I don't remind him and we just wait for Netflix. Smile

If you ever do understand the appeal, could you explain it to me?

I could never explain the appeal of The Muppet Show to my mum, she hated it. But she got overruled 'cos my dad voted with me. Smile

Howdy Doody and Ozzie and Harriet were a product of a particular time period, a peculiar sociological pattern that's never likely to re-emerge. I don't get them either, but I know I'm not supposed to and so it doesn't frustrate me.

Someone who doesn't understand The Muppets, though? That's just weird.

Seth Rogan is going to be the Green Hornet? Why wasn't I informed of this?

Didn't they make this movie last year?

And didn't it star Alec Baldwin?

Chow was going to direct and co-star in it and they had creative differences. I believe Michel Gondry is going to direct now.

Natalie Portman completely solidifies her geek cred by signing up for Thor. Thing is, they're attaching her to the Jane Foster character, which again brings up the question of whether we're going to see Thor's Donald Blake alter ego at all.

I'm pleased by the news, by the way, it's just . . . intriguing. And means I will now see this movie in theatres. Because, well, Natalie Portman.

Have watched for increments approaching 60 seconds. Long enough for it to raise welts on the skin. They burn.

I don't know of anyone who would debate that. Gummi Bears was the first in a long string of very good Disney shows in the 80s.

I didn't even watch He-man. G.I. Joe actually had occasional moments of awesome amidst the stupid. I doubt that the same is true of He-man.

X-Men was definitely later than 80s. One of the reasons it was so good was that they were retellings of some of the best X-men comics. I mean, like most things, the book was better than the show, but when your story is by Chris Claremont, you can't go wrong.

(See also: Ducktales as retellings of Carl Barks comics. Great stuff.)

It started in 1992, and I've yet to see much of it, although I've heard it's quite excellent.

You missed nothing by missing He-Man. Nothing at all.

Ooo, and let's not forget Tailspin and Gargoyles while we're waxing nostalgic! In fact, thread idea.

Eek Eek

A friend just told me about this tonight! She said, "Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter..." and I said, "That might turn out okay." Then I looked it up on IMDB and saw Alan Rickman listed as the Caterpillar and Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat and now I'm really excited!

Does anyone know of this forthcoming movie, wot I cannot remember the name of? Earth has lots of longstanding alien visitors - refugees, I think. There's a bit of a Alien Nation feel about the plot, except that the aliens are insectoid rather than humanoid. Gah!
