M had tubes put in when she was 2.5 (I think) and my biggest worry was the anesthesia, y'know, just because. When she awoke, she was groggy, disoriented and extremely upset at the world (from just being young and out of it and unable to really express herself). It was a lot of holding, rocking, papering and reassuring her as much as me that it was all good. After sleeping it off for a few hours, it was a BUNCH more pampering

I'm glad to hear it went... um, all in all well for your little girl, too, JP. And I'm sure we'll get our share of groggy crankiness, too.
But really, it's encouraging to hear from people whose kids have gone through the same thing. I know the whole procedure is routine, but... yeah, like you said, the idea of anaesthesia is just unnerving when kids are involved. ------------------------------------------------- Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here. |

i have not gone through that, but i did get my tonsils out when i was little.
i did scream the hospital ward down, but that was because they gave me my pre-meds as in injection in the butt (those on the other side of the wards got medicine!) and i have a fear of needles! and i woke up and said.. "i want a pillow" nope "i want a drink of water" nope " then i want to go hooooooooooooome!" and went back to sleep sad but i didn't get tonsilities again and so was very glad i had the op! ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. when's spring due?. |

It's horrid isn't it and terribly scary for parents (probably more so than for the kids as they don't know what's really going on a lot of the time)
I had my tonsils out too Smaug - and remember asking the nurse "just what do you think you are doing?" when she was trying to distract me from the backside jab with a book! I don't think they do that now do they? ********* Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand. Kurt Vonnegut |

It went really well for my son too when he had them dome. It was at our children's hospital and the anesthesiologist had a collection of flavored lip balms, so the kids got to pick which "flavor" they would smell when the mask was put on- he rubbed it around the inside. He was cranky when he woke up, but not too terribly since he got to pick a video to watch right away. Thomas The Tank Engine could solve most anything at that age. ______________________ Fandangling across the moony sky, went the Beezee bold as brass, side-saddle she sat, on a big painted bat, shooting moonbeams out of her a(censored)e. ~Joe ________________________ Isn't sanity really just a one trick pony, anyway? how old is Miss S, Tis? I had to go under when I was seven or eight (broken arm). the anesthesia was really no big deal for me once I stopped freaking out about the whole thing, I think because of the smell. but they just had me count backwards from 100 until I fell asleep (which happened pretty fast). and, if she does come out of it during the operation (which I did), she probably won't be able to feel anything, and they can put her back under really fast.
I'd warn her about the weird smell and the mask thing, though. other than that, it's just falling asleep. oh, and one of my "kids" started calling me sister tonight. he said he loves me cuz I'm warm, and then he just said he loves me. ~ We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. Just wanted to let you guys know that Miss S is doing fine. The operation went really well on Monday - she was up on her feet 20 minutes later, dragged us to the hospital café and wolfed down an egg sandwich and lots of ice cream. And she can hear much better now, right on time for her 6th birthday (on Saturday).
So all is well here - thanks, everyone, for the comforting and encouragement. ------------------------------------------------- Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here. |

Man... The kids are making paper boats and I just heard my 6-year-old say to her 3 year-old sister (in an angry, commanding tone): "Could you bring me the scissors now!? Otherwise I don't believe you're going to grow up to be a lady!"
Um, wtf? Mind you, it's really not something I've ever used with them. Seems to work, though! ------------------------------------------------- Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here. |

So we had our annual Christmas party at our friends K&J. Its a big shebang! A lot of people have kids now, so the evening gets split, first half with kids, second half just adults. And since we are all one big happy geek family, you get pictures like this:
Yes, its a D20 plushy and a lolipop made to look like a skeleton arm. Oh, the goofiness! And last, the mad scientist that works in their basement (he made simon's werewolf mask) had a robotic kitty sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Felicity's charms were too much, and she talked him out of it. She played with it the rest of the night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Discordian Priestess, Keeper of the Golden Pine-Apple. Those are adorable, Lady K.
And Tis, sooo happy to hear the great news on your little one's surgery and that it seems to be helping immediately. You all will be sooo much happier now, I'm sure of it. Except that she won't be as easy to ignore you now ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I live for three things: The Girls, football, and live jazz. What do you live for? Let passion drive you. |

Graeme is 6 today! I can hardly believe that he is so old! We measured him last night and he is exactly 4' tall. He's the tallest kid in his kindergarten class by about 3 inches.

They're so cute! Thank goodness your little one had a good op Tis. My little one (who's 11 and not so little) had a horrid absess and was off school all last week - tooth was pulled on Thursday. But I couldn't believe just how much fuss a bad tooth could make!

So, we got him a bike.
Our house is tiny, so while everyone was occupied in the kitchen with his new robot toy (it's pretty much a Roomba without a vacuum attachment), I went to the basement and brought it up, arranging it in the living room so it would be the first thing he'd see. He came into the room. He stopped, dumbfounded. He fell face-first on the ground. Honest. At one with the carpet. *grins* It was a good birthday present. __________ AJGraeme "You see, I have a policy about honesty and ass-kicking: if you ask for it, I have to let you have it." -Taylor Mali "I am a sexy, shoeless god of war." -Belkar |
