Nah, we're not going to have Olmert shot just for accepting a few illicit payments.

Seriously though, none of the hopefuls is really an extremist, they're all at a similar place on the political map.

The only thing that does worry me (and it's a terrible thing to think, I know) is that if Livni is elected she'll have to deal with an increase in terrorist audacity, so to speak, because they won't want to appear weak when their opponent is a woman.

i dunno.

i find it immensely scary that some of you guys don't understand the basics in Canadian government - the fact that we are a constitutional monarchy and what that means.

if you don't know the basics of your neighbor, one that you have rather intwined political, defense, trade, interests...how are you in any position to judge and critique the foreign policy of your own government?

I mean, your first and third top suppliers of Oil and natural gas are those countries above and below you. stats. So when there was all the criticism of you guys going to war in Iraq for oil - we were all, well...okay. That makes no sense.

really. its scary. the information is incredibly accessible. maybe its just scary in my head; but to be an active informed citizen requires more work than its ever had, and knowledge of more information than ever.

I don't think that's unique to Americans though, SP; there's plenty of stupid people in all countries. People said the same thing about Britain, and we're essentially self-sufficient in oil right now thanks to the North Sea.

"The other night I dreamed that King George VI was dead, and that Helen Hardinge had somehow or other got herself proclaimed Queen of England, and that I was detailed to go and tell her that it wouldn't do at all; and when I did this, all she said was, 'You see, I am really Queen Mary,' and I said, 'Oh very well' - words to that effect, and woke up.

Last night I dreamed that Eisenhower came to stay with us, and he insisted on being put to sleep in the dog kennel, with a collar and chain about his neck."

Jezza?

Sorry SP, I'm not disagreeing with you - it's doubly worrying with America as they're the sole superpower and so stupid people can have near absolute power - but I've spoken to dumb Canucks, Brits, Frenchies, and all sorts too Smile they're all pretty similar...

i realize there are dumb people, but i tend to think people on this board are smart, so its worrying that they don't know.

I don't think she's talking about stupid people, Mark - it's ignorance.

It's largely not American's fault - as I've said on here before, they get fuck-all holiday and then have to go a long way before they hit another country. They are far less under threat than other countries, and the fact that America is so powerful means that there's not the same need for understanding other countries and cultures as there is in less powerful ones. (I just saw a bit off the Adam and Joe show from about 1996 where they cornered American tourists in Picadilly, London and made them draw a map of Britain. You would not belive.)

All the stuff means there's not the same need to look outside their borders that other nations have. Saying that people are unaware is not the same as saying they are stupid, but it is equally worrying.

I am not smart and anything vaguely clever usually whizzes straight over my head. Remember not to ask my advice on anything. It never fails to amaze me that when some of you are expressing your feelings over news, politics, ethics, anything in depth for that matter, my brain explodes. (sorry - private rant)

I guess I can understand that Domi, yeah.

see, i figure there is need for more understanding. if you are going to set yourself up as defender of the free world, you should at least have your citizens understand what bits of the world are free and which are not. if you don't even know the political set up of your neighbors - it tends to make me believe that the rest of the knowledge is equally shakey.

I think that's absolutely right - when I say 'no the same need' I mean from the point of view of 'American society' or whatever it's called. I think people in America (and everywhere else) should know more about the outside world, what I'm saying above is that there are reasons for America being insulated from it the way it is. That's a part of reason why terrorists attacking came as such a shock - is most of the time the world can't touch you, then it's not a priority to make friends with it or be aware of it.

I think what Domi says about theimperatives to know about other countries is very pertinent. Power does compensate for a lot.

(Apopro of nothing, this reminds me of sharing a cab with a random uniformed US soldier in West Germany in the 1980's. He'd been there six months, knew he was in Europe, but hadn't really narrowed it down any further and was supremely untroubled by this. Of course, the fact that he was bombed out of his head on drugs might have helped him relax. If you've ever seen Buffalo Soldiers with Joaquin Phoenix, well...)

i always worry that i'm holding people to an impossibly high elitest standard. i went to uni, i studied history (which probably gives you a fairly comprehensive grasp of world politics - or at least mine did). i naturally question everything i see because of university training. not everyone is like this, and maybe i shouldn't expect them to?

Yeah, I worry the same thing Big Grin But there's sone stuff (and I speak of Britain here) which I just think you should know, yet people don't. I mean, some people think the Vikings came before the Romans! I mean, you do it in primary school, guys!

This isn't exactly making headlines, but since I posted the article about how vasopressin causes George Clooney not to want to commit to a relationship (I think that was basically the gist Razz), here's a science blog picking apart the research in question. As is to be expected, the findings aren't nearly as impressive when you take a closer look.

But seriously, the phenomenon intrigues me: researchers discover some vague correlation, the media picks it up, simplifies and exaggerates, turns it into (often alarming or sensationalist) news, and if the stars are aligned right, the whole thing enters the collective consciousness as a "fact".
