I seem to remember a similar thread started by Black Jacque, but I can't locate it! So, unless it shows up this thread is for recommending great TV series to watch on DVD.

I recently finished watching the complete Upstairs Downstairs collection - loved it! This show is a blast! I laughed, I cried, and I learned "boil a stew, ruin a stew", and much much more!

Now I'm starting I Claudius. So far its been eye-poppingly scandalous! I tell you, old BBC TV seems as good as modern HBO!

I am a fan of series that you can get the whole thing in one set (even if that means they sadly died too fast). So...

Freaks & Geeks
Sports Night (Aaron Sorkin's first series... if you've watched West Wing you'll recognize a couple monologues, or at least snippets, that he used here first)
Space: Above and Beyond (remarkably dark sci-fi series from Fox... lots of space and ground combat stuff, pretty good cg, generally badass)

American Gothic!

It took years for them to release it but it's definitley entertaining. (Used to watch this back to back with x-files on friday night-nice way to end the work week)

Slings & Arrows

HBO-esque, with PBS undertones(?) - It's 3 seasons, 6 episodes each for a total of 6 discs. Great ensemble, with new characters each season and good development within - seen 'em all twice, and will probably add it to the collection down the road -- you know, when the format wars wrap up Big Grin

Another HUGE endorsement for 'Freaks and Geeks" here!

If you like Sci Fi I think Babylon 5 was great.

If you like silly crass yet witty and way too much fun cartoon series I would recommend 'The Venture Bros'

So far these are the only series that have compelled me to part with cash for DVD.

I've heard about this! I'd love to watch it.

Also I, Claudius was brilliant. (The books by Robert Graves are well worth reading, too.)

Edge of Darkness has only six 1-hour episodes, but was brilliant. Try and see it now before the Mel Gibson remake (sob) ruins it for you forever.

I'm currently HUGELY enjoying Stargate SG-1, which is much better than I expected (and hello, unexpected-and-slightly-embarrassing-crush-on-Richard-Dean-Anderson, nice to meet you).

I have the second season of Battlestar Galactica waiting in the wings when I've run out of SG-1.

The Tick. So very, very quotable.

Firefly, although if I have to tell you that, I'm shamed to know you.
Corner Gas, described as "Seinfeld in Saskatchewan," but I prefer to call it "Seinfeld, only funny."

Veronica Mars - I love all three seasons, but the first season is a definite must-see.

Supernatural - Pretty boys fighting demons, what more could you want?

we have been very happily watching that (rented from Netflix). Also rented and enjoyed Dexter, and another vote for Freaks and Geeks. We also own Firefly and My So-Called Life.

Oh yes, it was brilliant! A few years ago they showed reruns during our summer holiday, every morning at 9AM. I'd get my cup of coffee and watch an episode every single day. I didn't even have that decadent starting-my-day-watching-telly feeling, because, you know - it was old. And British!

Arrested Development, chyah! I would imagine it being incredibly stale and non-amusing to someone who isn't very prominent in English, since a lot of the jokes are with word play.

How dare you call it old!

I remember when it was first aired on Masterpiece Theater
back ... in ... pre-Columbian days .. you know, when phones had dials
and a tv remote was "It's your turn."

Oh, people can not like the show, I just know mudpuppy and, well, it'd be odd.

There are a few seasons of the UK Whose Line out on DVD.
