Unsterblich does mean "immortal".
But the "sterb" part of it comes from the word for "dying" (so more like "undying") and I find that the word just sounds very harsh with the german r in the middle. Kind of like dying itself.

Also, I've just always thought English sounds...rounder, softer, easier to swallow, more pleasant. German has more rough and hard expressions but also more precise, clear ones. It can be more harshly emotional. But that's a very very subjective view from someone who was raised with both languages.

So anyway immortal beloved sounds more like..."yeah yeah, go on daydreaming", to me. While the German expression sounds like Werther about to kill himself because Charlotte doesn't love him back Smile

Well, yes, "Immortal Beloved" wouldn't have been my chosen term. It's both too flowery while sounding like a euphemism used by a funeral home for the deceased. But Gary Oldman totally sells it.

The German, on the other hand, looks like a sound one might make when having some kind of seizure.

Well, that was what you had been talking about! I just summed it up!

You are a Player. There are no small parts, only small people, and we suspect that's due to malnutrition endemic to the period. Every night you're a different person, knave or king, man or woman, 875 roles in all. The ones the audience liked got you applause, and the ones they didn't got you pelted rotten vegetables. The theater is a harsh mistress, but you love her dearly. Plus, it beats working for a living!

'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice
'You must be' said the Cat 'or you wouldn't have come here'

Ok, not a boardie but I have to quote it somewhere. Think of someone you who just emanates wise old man-ness, and now imagine him saying with his deep, wise old man voice "I don't like silk panties. Well, at least not on me"
