Thanks anyway!

I think I'll just go mad. It seems like the thing to do.

Is windows explorer on the list?

yeah, but then if I click it it just takes me round in circles if I want to run, if I want to save, it gives me an icon that when I click on it does the same.

I tried the zip file, but it didn't seem to work.

Hrm. Okay, find regedit.exe in your Windows folder. Rename it regedit.com (if you've got file extensions hidden, you'll need to tell folder options to show them.) Then double click it to run it. Hopefully it will run. Go to File -> Import, find the .reg file that you unzipped, and select that. Hopefully that will import the correct defaults. When you are done, close the registry editor, and rename regedit back to regedit.exe. You may need to restart after.

didn't work Frown

I couldn't rename it back to .exe because another file with .exe had popped up in the meantime! but I did everything else and restarted and stuff, but no dice.

I would just wipe the computer (I've been toying with doing that anyway - it's getting slow) if it wasn't for the music, and the fact that whatever I use to delete things probably won't work either Mad

Try renaming from the command line.

still won't do it - it's not changing the name that's the problem, it's that there's now the new file with the same name so I can't change it to that one.

Thanks for your help, guys, but this might be a hopeless case!

Try deleting the new exe file first through the command line?

I wouldn't worry about the regedit file. When you renamed it, Windows immediately replaced the missing regedit.exe with a new copy. If you want, you can delete regedit.com. Or leave it.

The only other thing I can think of to try to fix your problem is:
Open a folder, any folder. Go to Tools -> Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab.

Scroll through the list to make sure "EXE" is not there. If it is there, delete it. Either way, click "New", type in EXE, click the Advanced button, and select "Application" from the list of types. If there's a restore button, click that. Then click OK.

I've got a few issues, likely related but not sure.

A) My monitor flickers sporadically, not often, a flicker here and there then nothing for a while. It's increased in frequency lately, but we're talking sometimes 10, 30 minutes between flickers. Oh, and it ALWAYS flickers at startup, after the Welcome to Windows screen.

B) My wireless router loses power. Then obviously my connection from my laptop and my PC go phooey. It comes right back up, takes a moment for my computers to pick up the signal and get reconnected, then it can work for 2 minutes before the next outage, or 10-15 minutes. It started in earnest a week ago, has really picked up since Monday. It's gone out 4 times in the time it took me to write this.

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, and another thing. My taskbar icons won't stay put. I'm constantly losing my volume icon, and the "safely remove your drive" icon for my external drive, and my printer notification icon, and my network connection icon (though that's been recent, and likely tied to my issue above).

My old (CRT) monitor did that. Whenever it flickered/rolled I just smacked it upside the head and it straightened out. Go me!

I think Snazz or Royko called this strategy percussive maintenance. Big Grin

Well, this is an LCD, and I think more power issue related than smacking will help.

This is just a shot in the dark but could it be a power issue?
Have you tried different plugs or a new powerstrip?
If power went out very briefly it might explain your problems except for the speaker icon.

Just a thought

Contact Hell: now with extra SaaS goodness.

OK, so I'm trying to develop a database (to be eventually imported into my CRM system) to Rule Them All. This is to track my business contacts to see who I've contacted about what.

This is proving about as difficult as returning the Ring to Mordor.

I have a couple of .xls spreadsheets, data in Plaxo, LinkedIn and Mail as well as a zillion google contacts in csv form. Duplicates and out of date entries and different versions of the same name...oh my!

So anyone have any idea how to organize this mess? I initially tried to export everything as csv files (and even that was difficult in a couple of cases) to one .xls file. It's just not working.

I've looked at programs like eGrabber, but that requires cutting and pasting too. I'm semi-OS agnostic about this (although I'd prefer something OS X native), and I don't care if it's software or SaaS.

Any help at all would be most welcome.
