Not a good idea. If the drive has entered a questionable state--throw it out.

How old is the drive?

You can download manufacturer diagnostics that will give you a health status. If the drive is in warranty, and with the Diagnostic Code produced, you can get a replacement for the cost of shipping.

I was only going to try and make an external drive to get some data off of it.
A friend of mine thinks I can use a Windows XP live boot disc and it will load into memory and give me a bare bones XP operating system. Then if I am lucky I can copy over files to an external drive.

The drive is somewhat new. When I am done I am going to check the warranty info and see what my options are.

You could put it in the external enclosure...that's really no different from making it a slave in another computer. Then you could plug it in and try to access it from a working computer, and even if you can't, you can always run chkdsk on the external drive to try to fix it. Worse comes to worse and you get nowhere, you can always take it out of the enclosure and put it back in your computer.

The only bare-bones XP I'm aware of that you can get by booting off the CD is the recovery console (although I could be wrong, I haven't been keeping up with XP closely.) You could use the recovery console to copy files off, but it's a command line interface, so it's a little more cumbersome to use. But theoretically, it's possible.

I have had some success. Smile

I made a bootable CD using "Puppy Linux". This loads into RAM and I can run a Linux operating system.
When I got in there it seems that I can get to all my data. Smile

I plugged in my new Seagate external hard drive but it starts beeping and will not mount. Frown

I did a little web searching and found that Seagate does not make it's newer drives compatible with Linux. Frown BASTARDS

Luckily I have an older WD "My Book" hard drive and it seems to be working fine. I just don't have as much free space on this hard drive as the newer one.

Files seem to be copying fine.

After I get the files I want back I will decide what I want to do next.

Thanks Smile

I couldn't find a way for my old one - it was the main reason for replacing.

CD burners.

How long would one last if you were burning CDs all day? For lets say 8 hours a day for 3 weeks. (Work related - not starting a CD manufacturing business).

average optical drive lasts for 100,000 hours. you could burn CDs 24 hours a day for 11.5 years.
so i think that you should be fine.

is an optical drive different than just a normal CD burner? 'Cause I have a normal one and its burning out after 1500 and not even continuous use.

"Optical" drive really just means CD and/or DVD drive. Refers to the general technology rather than a specific kind. I think.

Is there a problem with MSN at the moment or is it just me?
I'm getting error 81000306, which apparently is to do with Firewalls, but mine has always been OK with MSN. Plus I've tried turning it off completely & it made no difference.
ETa: it seems OK now, strangeness...

I'm trying to burn CD's of the mix that I've created for each of my castmates...problem is, there's 25 of us. And iTunes is telling me I can only burn 7 copies of the playlist I created.

Anyone have a sneaky way around this?

Use another program. Itunes mostly helpful features let us sometimes forget that there are other programs too.

What computer are you on?

A Dell Inspiron 1525. Windows Vista. I've got Windows Media Player, but how do I access my playlist that I created in itunes?

It might not be possible to do that. Easiest way would be to recreate the playlist in Media Player.

Yes and no.

If you have the right memory for your computer, it should be that simple. The important part is to make sure that this is the case.

If you want a more technical answer, you should ask elsewhere.

I'm just trying to be helpful without real knowledge.
