What dad forgot to mention is the one minus to that set-up: the camera and lack-of-flash are impressively unimpressive, but other than that, he loves the thing.

maybe even more than me  ;_;

But that won't stream/play me Amazon content, right? I mean, not so I can tell, anyway. Still, looks very nice. Must consider what I really want to use the tablet for and how mobile I need to be with my movie watching.

After looking around a bit, you should be able to stream from Amazon on a normal android device if you go through the website, as there is no application from Amazon for it. Some users I saw did have issues with streaming and had to install flash and use a different browser to get it to work, and others were not able to stream in HD, but overall with some possible tweaking you should be able to get it to work (until Amazon changes something again.)

I think Amazon is being very stupid by playing from the Apple playbook and trying to force people to use the kindle.

Short answer: No

Long Answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo unless you like tweaking crap and using old apps

> Netflix
> runs on everything
> uses Amazon's servers
> Amazon Video
> Unlike Kindle and Music, doesn't run on Android
> wtf

Allegedly, the browsers Opera, Dolphin, and Photon Flash can do Flash stuff, but lemmee test 'em before I consider any of them viable for Android + Amazon...

EDIT: Or this might work more better...

Interesting! Hmm... it doesn't show up when I search for it on my phone. I see it on my PC, but not my phone, so I wonder if it'll show up on a tablet? Hmm...

It didn't install on my tablet, JeePster, so I'm guessing it's still not a viable option.

I went through all the options, save rooting and getting an older Flash running on my tablet, and I've decided that Skyfire Web Browser 4.0 is the bst way to watch flash videos on Android, with 3 small annoyances:

- The broswer will cost you $5
- The browser will -only- play Flash video, not play Flash games
- Since I don't have Amazon Prime I cannot 100% guarantee it'll work.

I think what I'm realizing is that I don't need my tablet to be an entertainment piece. I need/want it to be gmail, google drive, youtube first, and the social stuff that they all seem to do, then anything else like streaming video second. Now I just need to save my pennies.

What do you guys think of Chromebooks? I like the idea of a notebook built with a SSD, and I'm intrigued by this. Wondering how to compare apples to oranges between it and a tablet.

[ETA] Ah, after some more reading, I'm understanding that this will not allow for other programs to be installed on it, only the OS/Browser, and that everything needs to run through the browser? I get the whole cloud-based storage for docs and such, but didn't get that I couldn't install things like a music player, or IM client or such. Though I'm guessing that music and IM can be handled by websites? Hmm.. interesting..

I have an iPad, and since Amazon came up with a digital video app for iPads, and totally happy with it with one exception: it's a first gen, and it doesn't have a camera.

I think the next e-reader/tablet/thing I'm going to get will be an iPad mini. Because although I like my Kindle Fire, I like my iPad better.

I've drunk the Mac-aid. *Shame*

I'm no help, I love my mac! The yarn shop lady got an ipad for the shop and for X-mas got minis for her and her husband. I don't like the mini 'cos the text is too small. The ipad is barely usable - every webpage I open I have to expand and that's annoying.

There's nothing wrong with Macs, it's just that if you have the tiniest bit of technophile in you, Maccing becomes very iXpensive.

and im cheap

HAHAHA, no, I shall not be $pending for a Pixel. I could see the chromebook working for me if I'm still able to do things like wordprocess a google doc offline in the Chrome OS. I'm thinking that the majority of my use will be at home or other places where I have access to wifi. Hell, that's what I did with my netbook, the only difference was when I wasn't connected, I could still be productive.

It all comes down to what you want out of a device. If you want to use a device the way you want to use it, don't buy a mac/. If you want to customize anything on your device, don't buy a mac. If you want to just use your device the way the manufacturer tells you to use it, buy a mac.

Going to stop now before i go on a rant about why apple charges 3x as much for the exact same hardware for their laptops and desktops, and how iOS is horrible and is the worst UI I have used until windows 8 came along.

I'm actually surprised by how little I mind to being to customise my iPad all that much. I've been working on PCs since, oh, the early '90s, and I wouldn't switch to Mac, yet I'm perfectly happy to use the iPad as dictated by Apple. After more than half a year of using it, I can say with confidence that it's screwed with me way less than PC platforms have.

Ended up getting a Galaxy Tab2 and after a couple of days using it I'm pretty happy. Definitely wanted a tablet over the chromebook or any laptop. Decided I didn't really need a keyboard and the Transformer/Infinity was a bit out of my price range (once the keyboard was added). So, the Galaxy Tab it is, and we'll see how it goes!

On a different note, as I was shopping around, I saw that all of the Windowz based laptops have Win8 on them, and I just can't imagine people being happy about that (especially running it with a mouse/touchpad) versus what they're probably used to with their android/ipad OS.
