This is an unusually active time because of the HotR-Gathering. We've been rather quiet the rest of the year.

Heyla

@Ceridwen - First time in Leimen, about 300m higher on the mountain than Boris Becker's place. I know this due to not being able to get home one day. -snicker- Second time in Heidelberg itself, a few minutes from the HauptstraBe (I know, 'ss' I just always loved the look of the almost-B replacement character. -g-)

@Limertilly - Awww, sorry you could not make it. I can definitely commiserate. I did not think I was going until about 36 hours before it started. -g-

@His Nodle Girl - Fame and Fortune show up in the HallowEVA thread, I am certain, but I highly doubt there are any of me. This is not a loss, trust me. -laugh-

I've never been to either, but my Dad had some training sessions at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen back in the 90s, and it's pretty famous for being a student party town. Big Grin

Heyla, Ceridwen

Neat! At the time I lived there, I so wanted to go to Heidelberg University as there were rumours amongst Gymnasium students that the saber duelling and scars STILL showed up, if more infrequently. -laugh-

But honestly, the thing I miss most? I was MUCH shorter then and the townhouse on Rohrbacherstrasse had these aweseomely cool wide, long outside window ledges that just fit me. -g- I used to love lying on the one outside my room after finishing homework until evening closed in.

Hart, I was just down in your neck of the woods eating my way through Louisiana! I discovered boudin while I was down there...I also discovered cracklings, but I quickly left them to obscurity. Boudin, however will remain part of my repertoire. Nom.

At one of these meets I have to actually meet you and give you a proper hug Alaura! And then we can eat our way through wherever we happen to be Smile

What's Boudin?

Sadly, Steve and I did not find truly excellent food in the wilds of Wisconsin (with few exceptions) or on this trip in general. Started off in the Philly airport with an acceptable bagel breakfast sandwich, then between Milwaukee and Madison was one exception - Qboda (Qdoba? it started with a Q) which is like a Panera version of Taco Bell - they use fresh ingredients, organic meats, real Mexican white cheese. It was excellent, not too expensive and fast. I wish we had that chain over here. Supper was had at The Shed, and was nothing special. Breakfast at the resort was OK, nothing fantastic, french toast. Steve had pancakes. But the food at the Country Kitchen buffet was ghastly. Avoid it at all costs folks. But it was right before the lecture and we had no time to really peruse a menu, the other food might have been OK, but the buffet was awful.

Breakfast buffet at the resort was typical, eggs, sausage, bacon, really nommy pecan sticky buns and I had my first pasty at the party at the HotR! It was sooooooo good. I didn't have the chili sauce because I was afraid of dribbles, so it could have had a few more spices, but I expect they typically come from a sauce. I had another one later. Nibbles were also to be found and were typical nibbles, cheese and crackers.

Then resort breakfast buffet was totally deja-food and we got our books signed and sped off to the Milwaukee airport. Really good sandwiches from some place in the US Airways terminal - organic meats and breads, kinda expensive, but filling and tasty, so I didn't mind. Philly airport: ghastly, the choices are limited and so we trekked over to the other terminals, only to find the same choices there. Settled on Wendy's because it was at least familiar - ugh. inedible lumps of possibly chicken, overcooked burger. bleh.

*virtual hugs for now* Eventually a WEVA will occur in a year that I am neither a) poor or b) lacking in PTO! When that happens, I have a HUGE hugs surplus that has built up from every WEVA I haven't been able to make!

Boudin is...well... I think the Cajun Grocer describes it best. As I was driving through bayou country, every so often a roadside shop would have BOUDIN painted on its tin roof, or a gas station would announce BOUDIN & CRACKLINS on it's price board. I guess Boudin is as ubiquitous in Southern Louisiana as Jerky is in Southeast Michigan.

(pssst, Maeve- Qdoba is ok, but Chipotle is better! It's the same idea but they start with lime-cilantro rice that is SO ADDICTING!)

I have heard of Chipotle, but there's none near me (I don't think so anyway). I love lime and cilantro!

ETA: ooh, wait, there's one in State College! They don't have a map that shows locations, just a thing to type in city, state or zip code. So I typed in Pennsylvania and it's treating that like a town name ?

Heyla

@Maeve - The link is good but non-specific on cursory examination. Think of boudin as omnivorous sausage and you will not go too far wrong. It can kind of remind me of haggis at times, actually.

Mmm, Chipotle is one of my favourite chains when I am in a place to indulge in it. The name makes me think it will be nice and spicy and thus taste-able (for me). -g-

@Alaura - Like sausage and hot dogs, I find it hard to eat craklin at time. Someone... told me of what and how they were made. -laugh-

Hart, what do you think of their "hot" salsa? Wink I have to have them put it on the side because I can only handle the tiniest bit- with the amount they put on I'd burn all my taste buds off!

Interesting. Back home we have boudin blanc, which is white in color and contains pork meat (liver, mostly), milk, spices and herbs, but no rice, and boudin noir, which is made mostly of spices, pork meat and blood.

Oh, and welcome, new boardies!

Heyla

@Count - Do you have fangs or breakfast cereals? -snicker- Err, seriously now, that is neat.I wonder how the boudin blanc would differ but... not something I shall indulge.

@Jena - It is pretty decent. I am somewhat anosmic so I like REALLY spicy food (that being food I can reliably taste or, at least, experience -g-). I actually heard of this place in Boston that for Halloween or possibly year-round does a pasta plate with naga jholokia peppers. Mmmmm.... ZORCH!
